Need help, pc wont turn on!

Thread Starter
My friend has a 939 setup with 4 x 512MB DDR400 ram.

He upgraded to some G.Skill DDR400 2 x 1GB with better timings, and so he could go for 4GB if he wanted to.

His board is an Asus A8V Deluxe.

In trying to swap over the RAM he broke one of the clips that holds the ram in place, off the board so he had to use the other pair of slots. (the board has 4 slots).

Now the pc wont turn on. If it has NO ram in then everything will spin up but obviously nothing on screen as theres no ram in the pc.

With ram in (either new ram or old ram) the pc fans spin up for 2 seconds then turn off.

HELP!

Just try 1 stick of RAM in 1 slot, that you know works.

At least then you can get it booted.

Have you tried to boot with all (compatible) combinations of RAM sticks?

Blow out the DIMM slots to make sure they are free of debris, perhaps a small piece of plastic found its way into one when the clip was broken.

Good luck.

If the lever broke, and your careful, one could be transfered from another slot... you might even find one from someone with a old MB. If the plastic slot it self broke it's generally useless because the RAM don't seem to remain secure in the slot and even if it works will become an issue with time

Try one stick of RAM first, and clearing the CMOS.

Ok panic over. The pc is working with 2 x 512MB (the old ram), but wont turn on if the new ram is put in.

Currently trying different slots with just 1 stick of the new RAM.

the new ram is DDR 400 G.SKill 2 x 1Gb sticks. they are from my old pc so i know they work fine.

the board supports:

"- 4 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 4GB DDR400/DDR333/DDR266"

so it should work fine, but the board doesnt want to come on with it in

Err...I'm sure the notch is off center, so unless they were amazingly loose he should have noticed, and even then the clips wouldn't have clicked
