Solution is found to Sapphire vapor-x R9 280X "VRM" over heating and throttling problem :) GOOD NEWS :)

After searching alot for my new Sapphire vapor-x R9 280X card's vrm overheating problem. I finally found the solution smile.gif It is actually a bios problem. Old bios cards of this series never have vrm overheat , however with new bios of this series vrm get hot. Especilly when overclocked to high frequencies with like 1.2,5- 1.3 voltages you can see the card goes up to 100-110 vrm heat and throttles. NOW TAKE A DEEP BREATH cause I find the solution.

Sapphire uses 2 different vram types in their cards . And one of them gets hot after a certain level of overclock. and this bios ( the latest one which came with the latest part of these series) is not suitable for especially that vram users. So in a forum (a gpu mining forum actually ) I found the solution. people there mods the bad bios for the new series and makes the vrm's run 20-30 c cooler. for example mine was 90-95 at stress test and now it is 70-75:D:thumb:

you just need to go the forum and find the correct bios in the topic:

https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=10313.0

and also here

https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=12369.225

or just use the bios I use for sapphire vapor-x r9 280x:

http://www.upload.gen.tr/d.php/www/eTyTg/Sapphire_E21004_V44_K2_NT_AGR.rom.html

you can use "winflash" to flash bios in windows 8

now I am enjoying full overclock and throttleless and cool and very high performance card. biggrin.gif:D

I am sure Sapphire is gonna make new bios like these people do and make it officially-solved . but if you dont want to wait sapphire to do it. just do as I tell you above smile.gif

other 2xx card users of sapphire (and maybe other brands) can also use this as a guide especially this link gives moded bioses for each cards. :

I don't get it, how a new bios can force your card to consume less power? And what is the difference between all these bios?

I can see two different vram types, but what else?

Sapphire Vapor-X R9 280X BIOS FLASH GUIDE

As far as I know you all have some problems ( vrm , heat , performance drop , throttling) with this card . I had those same issues before flashing my card's bios with a modded bios . This bios and this guide is goingto to help you overcome all these problems. This card runs perfect but 0.41 bios is BAD ..SO here we gonna flash the card with a GOOD one which is v44 ( actually based on the 0.39 version which is the non-problematic bios version) . So all you need to do is to read below :

1- PREPERATION STEP :

In this step you need to learn your card's bios number and card's vram vendor. You can learn bios number with gpu-z such as :

and learn bios vram vendor with a software :

http://s3.dosya.tc/server18/ZxxnFC/MemoryInfo1005.zip.html

in the software :

900x900px-LL-fbab3fa6_abc.jpeg

there is "elpdia" or "hynix"

so mine is elpdia. learn what yours is.

2- FLASH PREPERATION STEP

In this step you need to download ATIWINFLASH tool :

http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2311/ati-winflash-2-6-7/

after you get it , you have to extract all files to a folder. After this step you need to get the moded bios for your card ( with the info you get ,bios vram info especially )

here is all the modded bios for Sapphire R9-280X :

Sapphire 280x Vaporx best bioses:

http://www.upload.gen.tr/d.php/www/eTyTg/Sapphire_E21004_V44_K2_NT_AGR.rom.html (elpdia) ( which I find best for elpdia and I use currently )

and others :

https://www.dropbox.com/s/vgfvp1peost0bxd/Sapphire_VXOCBG6A_U42_AGR.zip (Elpida)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/eag6qwjr8kxsg27/2104XTLBG6A-V42_AGR.zip (Elpida)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/uge8yz8n88ms4cr/2104XTLAFR-V45_AGR.zip (Hynix)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5kvgyof6plquq8h/2104XTLAFR-V46_AGR.zip (Hynix)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/tpg7l5o7ifu342a/Sapphire_E251_T03_AGR.zip (Hynix)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/7sq0gczfnt2xca7/Sapphire_E21004_LU_Hynix_AGR.zip (Hynix)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fwxlc0fldzsr9zx/Sapphire_E21004_LU_Elpida_AGR.zip

you need to download the one which suits your card and its vram.

3- FLASHING THE BIOS

This is the final step ahead. Now you go to the folder which you extracted atiwinflash , open it and put the bios (after opening the bios from zip of course) that you downloaded to the same folder. Now this step is important : YOU NEED TO RUN THE ATIWINFLASH.exe as ADMINISTRATION :

After the software opens you will see like this :

you need to click LOAD IMAGE box first and find the bios you put in the ATIWINFLASH folder you extracted. Then you need to click the PROGRAM box to flash the bios ... TADAAAAAAAA finally it flashes it and askes you to restart it ( DO IT !!) after you restarted your brand new GOOD bios and super sexy and performance card is ready to use smile.gif

I hope you get the help you need wink.gif

If it is not late to respond, I would like to know is the noise also lowered in Db(A) with your solution??

I have a good deal to get this card but dont like noise from that card that is shown here:

It would help me if i could know for sure is noise also stabilized with your solution or is that maybe typical noise for vapor-x custom cooling?
