A stealth game, during the night, should be -dark. if there is no full moon or lightsource, it should be near pitchblack.
Sadly, in games, nights are more like a cloudy daytime.

Dropping it to a level where you cannot say see without the nvg in chaos theory was riveting on the first play through and it holds up good on repeat ones. Some stealth games benefit more than others but to me I like it...it feels more realistic when it comes to detection and moreso non detection. And please show me a stealth game with really smart guards especially in the regard of detection when the player is in ridiculous places.

The game very clearly shows you what shadows are "absolute" dark that you can hide in without being seen, even if they look straight at you. This is also not un-realistic, speaking from experience from my childhood playing Hide-and-seek at night, it is entirely possible (assuming you're wearing dark colors) to be still in a shadow, have someone look directly at you, and not see you.

I understand you want it to be as dark as it would be in real life, but here is where they have to break away from realism to maintain playability. If they made it that realistic, you'd be running into walls constantly, and straining your eyes to see what's going on.

Regardless of how bright you perceive the area to be, the game still clearly indicates what areas are considered "shadows".

Omg you guys seem to have difficulties with how things work.

Heres a challenge.
Stand in your kitchen, ask a friend to stand in the doorway outside the kitchen, where its "dark."
Can you see him? Yes you can.

Seriously. Stop defending it, the game is bright as day. Even if I as a player, stand right infront of a candle, everything around, which is supposedly "dark" is bright as day. So I guess, the player has superhuman eyes, by your logic.

Maintain playability? What bogus are you talking about?
How in the world would making the game darker (thus realistic) make it harder to play? It would make it EASIER and also more logically (in terms of immersion) to play.

Thats not even how the actual game looks, in terms of darkness.
(does the game even have eye adaption?)

On my screens (VA calibrated and my xl2420T calibrated) its bright as day, everywhere. A guard could spot an ant carrying a pebble.
Besides, looking at that image, Im surprised how people consider that dark... but then again, our dark maps in Battlefield are bright as day since nextgen.

Metro, which isnt even a stealthgame, is darker.
Same with stalker and plenty other games, though I guess, its because they dont rely on the console crowd, i.e. children who need doritos and monster energy drinks coupled with explosions and shineys.

Garrett has a special eye....Sam has the goggles....end of the day stealth games are always going to feel awkard. I mean max range detection frontal cone on a guard is just ridiculously not real....50 yds too most often cmon. Maybe not mobile but as you start moving you are seen in reality but a game has to have mechanics. Also they never look up....ever. Thinking it will ever be super realistic is a mistake but adding some immersion is fun for some people even if the buck has to stop with something.

Yes, but Im not speaking of the player. Dark should be dark. As it makes more logical sense for teh AI not to spot you in a pitchblack corner. It makes NO logical sense for a guard not spotting you in a rather well lit corner.
ANd garret in Thief 4(? is it garrett?) doesnt have the special eye or does he? Looks normal to me.

Not sure what makes you say that, I took that screenshot specifically for you, and minus the paint drawn in arrows, that's exactly what it looks like on my screen.

And yes he does have a special eye. And yes, the game is smart enough that if you are STILL in a shadow, a guard can look right at you and not notice you, but if you are MOVING in a shadow, they will see the movement and spot you.

Don't get me wrong, I've seen the AI do some stupid stuff sometimes, like follow me into a room with 1 area to hide in, and they dont check that 1 area, but I've never felt like they should see me when they aren't.

And there are light sources, so it's never going to be pitch black, and even if there wasn't, they aren't going to release a game where you can't see a foot infront of you. You might as well be asking for the entire game to be like a dungeon in zelda if you were never given a lamp.
