GFX upgrade, 770, R280x which to chose ?

Thread Starter
Hello, so i have decided to finally get some new upgrades to play more modern games, as i'm not able to get all my parts right at this moments due to me just being broke, i 'll start out with the gfx and then ssd and so on.

My final system should look like this:

Core i5 I5-4670K
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H
G.Skill Ripjaws-X 2 x 4 GB
Samsung 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256 256 GB
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo ( might replace with something else )
Will add an 1920x1080 monitor at some point.
and all putted in my current Chassic Coolermaster HAF 932 running a Coolermaster Real Power 850W.

I'm torn between either an Gigabyte GV-N770OC-2GD or Sapphire TOXIC R9 280X, they are both the same price more or less here but i'm open to suggestions, I'm planning to OC the cards which ever card it will be, and hopefully it can be volt modded or unlocked aswell.
In the long run i'm going to either Cf/Sli which ever i choose and i'm worried about microstutter or any other problems that might be with dual card setups.

The games i play is Rome 2, Dayz, Bf3, Coh2 and my max price range is 265£/430$, around that area for which ever solo card it may be.

If there is any one with knowledge to either issues with the two cards or recomendations i would be thankful to hear it. smile.gif

Thank you

Regards Dan

I had to make the same choice recently with a similar budget (slightly less) ended up with the r9 280x and when I fixed the initial teething problems it worked great! Cant speak for the 770 tho

Go for the GTX 770 thumb.gif
BECAUSE
-Lower power consumption
-Better drivers
-free game deals (if you get that from wherever you are ordering from)
-will outperform the 280x in some games
-costs less due to the miner craze
- better drivers ( I had a 280x and sold it due to massive coil whine and aweful drivers )
-free recording software (shadowplay)
-faster boot time (i ***** you not it took my computer longer to boot when i had CCC compared to when i had Nvidia and now have NV again)
-If you get evga's 70 it comes with a free backplate and they have awesome customer service.
- Evga step up program if you go with evga
- Will run cooler the 280x

Im am sure that you can find bios to flash onto the card to surpass the voltage limit. EVGA and Gigabyte both use the reference design so bios should work for either of them if im not mistaken. If you do plan on SLI'ing then i would suggest grabbing a 780 and waiting a while to grab another. The performance comparison between a 770 sli and a 780 sli is night and day.

As the 2nd and 3rd post pointed out, they had problems with the 280x. As a 780 or 290 would blow my budget right in my face i dont have that option frown.gif, is 770 sli not worth is money wise compared to performance ?

I've been looking into the volt unlock here on overclock like this , As a 780 would blow my budget up in my face i dont have that option, is 770 sli really not worth it ? maybe even 760 sli would do it ? but how in the long term, if i were to keep them for longer wouldnt 770 fare better ?

The 1st user said that he has a 280x and fixed the issues the 2nd is a nvidia fanboy which is recommending nvidia on every thread.

For 1080p 2gb arent enough if you max out the games
