[Build Log] FTEKM02 - Silverstone FT02 Watercooling Mod

Thread Starter
Just finished my first watercooling build (yet another mod of the classic Silverstone FT02 case!). Much inspiration was taken from previous builds (especially lowfat's).
My primary modifications included cutting out parts of the bottom panel of the case and bottom lip of the hard drive cage which allowed me to fit in the radiator while keeping the 5 hard drive bays. I also replaced all rivets and screws with black ones for obvious aesthetic reasons and drilled out both a fill port at the top of the case and a drain port leading out from the back of the radiator.

Components

  • Case: Silverstone FT02B-W
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte G1.Sniper 5 Z87 with EK water block

Awesome work, I'm jealous.

Looks awesome. Always good to see a build that isn't red, black, and plastered with ROG wink.gif

We need more pron shots, tekm. It's not a build log if you don't show us the other stuff. wink.gif

In any case, yeah, I do agree with Lynchie that it looks really awesome. And clean. And neat. That Magicool rad is a monster!

I actually wanted to take more pictures but I ended up draining the loop and disassembling the entire setup before I got a chance to. I had issues with the EK waterblock which affected the functionality of my motherboard (essentially it neutered the USB chipset) and I burned through two motherboards before I realized that the ek waterblock was the culprit. Once I get everything up and running again I'll try to take more pics.

But for now my retroactive worklog will have to suffice!

To get the radiator to fit in only a couple of steps are needed as shown below:

Doing this gives you the extra few milimeters needed to fit in the radiator with the drive cage.
Although only the two raised rectangular sections in the bottom panel need to be removed I also ended up cutting out the metal grates as well for better airflow.

To actually place the radiator in the case I had to physically remove the bottom panel from the rest of the case by drilling out the rivets holding it in place.

I ended up replacing most of the rivets with black Alcoa-Marson brand (ABR-2Alblk) rivets (250" wide head, grip range of 0.060'' - 0.125'',diameter/hole size of 0.120-0.130'') which I purchased on eBay. The only rivets that I didn't replace/removal were those in the front of the case as I would have needed flat head/countersunk rivets in order to keep the front panel flush with the unibody exterior.

I used Rust-Oleum 7578838 Professional High Performance Enamel Spray Paint (Flat Black) to paint all of the screws and the top fan guard.

Plasti Dip was used to paint the PCI slot covers, I/O cover, and PSU.

To mount the hot swap bays (Silverstone CP05-SAS) I dremeled out one end of the adapters as well as the screw mount flange on the hard drive cage. I initially used zip ties to secure the bottom of the hotswap adapters to the cage but ended up reusing the screw mount piece that I cut off from the cage to secure the bottom of hot-swap bays instead. The screw mount piece now lies parallel instead of perpendicular to the top of the radiator so that it doesn't interfere with the fins on the radiator.

I also put the side viewing window on the inside which required getting longer screws and nuts and removing a small amount of noise isolation padding at the perimeter of the window.

My newest addition to the case are fan grill filters, which I sprayed painted matte black. I just found it too risky inserting and removing the SATA and power cables from the motherboard without damaging the fins and I don't want to take that risk again. I may take off the filters, however, after I remount everything else in the case.

that something I have noticed with my FT02 case.. the window was mounted on the outside of the case. unlike almost all the other FT02 cases I have seen. good to know i will need longer screws, Was going to do that this "weekend".

Actually, all FT02s come with the window on the outside.

What filter are you using on the bottom of the radiator?

I guess your drain doesn't look too bad. Better than I was expecting. biggrin.gif

Inside mounted window FTW.

thumb.gif to replacing all the mounting hardware w/ black ones. It is details like that that make the different IMO.
