Why does the OC do this? O_o

Thread Starter
Well I recently decided to do a bit of OCing on my E6600. I went into the bios, set the RAM timings as good as I could get them, and then downloaded a program called ClockGen. Which worked quite well. I only managed to get it to 3GHz because I'm running on stock cooling but my 3DMark05 score went from 14k to 16k. But for some strange reason, even though my processor never goes above 55C, I lost 10FPS in all my games.. Why is this?

Thanks in advance.

Where are you overclocking from? The BIOS or Windows with that program you have?

You should definitely overclock from the BIOS instead if you are using a program.

If you experience a slowdown, your overclock is most likely unstable. Your temps seem fine, but what is your vcore at? Are you keeping a 1:1 ration with your ram? Your FSB should be half of your RAM speed (ie. ddr800 would 1:1 with 400fsb). I assume the problem fixes itself when you go back to stock? Have you flashed your BIOS to a better version?

RAM, is more than likely not your issue if you are still being aggressive with it. Even if you are on a 1:1 ratio. None, the less, I will suggest you download memtest86 and throw it on a CD and test your RAM for stability. Let it run for at least 1 full pass (15-25min), two passes if you want to be anal about it.

My guess for your decrease in performance is your OC isn't really stable. You need to Prime your system for at least 8 hours to confirm stability. Use either Orthos BETA (SP2004), or dual Prime95. If you find that you are unstable (ie you get errors that halt the torture tests), you will need to up your vcore a little. Pump it up half a volt, and try again.

However, since you are running on stock cooling, that may limit how high you can push your vcore based on the fact that your running temps will be higher.
My advice to you is to upgrade your cooling. Either some better air or water.

As far as air coolers go, the best on the market is the Tuniq Tower 120. It's availability is questionable however. In the case that you can't find one, Scythe Infinity, Zalman 9700, and TT big Typhoon are all rather exceptional choices as well.

Good luck.

maybe the cpu is overheating and it,s doing some idle cycles to protect itself from frying , you can disable this from the bios I think .
