External HDD problems

Thread Starter
Have a standard IDE HDD in a usb external case. I use it to keep Itunes and all my music on so i can simply listen to it at work. I worked fine for ages and ages, on a variety of computers. Now when I plug in the drive it sometimes brings it up in explorer and sometimes dosen't. When it dosent it takes forever just constatntly reading and bring up the message "Delay Write Failed E:\\$Mft" It also does this wehen I try to open a file...on the odd occasion it appears in windows explorer it goes through the same long process.

Sounds like windows having a hissy fit about plugging and unplugging a dirve thats in use. When it did show up did it give you the option to "eject" it ?

Nope. I have safely removed the drive previously, then plugged it in and again it just sits there and reads it over and over again not bringing up anything. Could it have something to do with the privliges/permissions ie who can read/write/modify etc

Either a filesystem error or the hard drive is failing.

oook. I know I cant stop it from failing but how do I stop a file system error. Also it appears to happen only when I use the USB drive. If i attach it to the IDE direct to MBO it works fine

This sounds like a failing hard drive to me. Get some HDD diagnostic software from the manufactor and run it on that external drive while it is plugged in. Providing you are able to do that despite you current problem of course. Get back to us.

I was about to say it shouldnt be a failing HDD but if it starts to do that... I'd backup around now.
