[Build Log] Replacing my 5-year-old system.

Thread Starter
Hello gents,

I am planning to replace my 2008/2009-era system with something new in the next several months.

Here is what I am thinking for core components:
  • Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VI GENE, Z87, LGA 1150
    • Most likely, I will only ever use 1 GPU + 1 Sound Card at most. So, microATX is fine.
  • CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K
  • CPU Fan/Heatsink: Noctua NH-U9B SE2
    • Will not be going for a crazy overclock. If I can run the 4770k at 4.0GHz stable and keep it out of the danger zone temperature-wise, I'll be happy. I think this cooler will suit me just fine, but feel free to make suggestions.
    • My ambient temperatures generally do not go over 72F/22C.
  • RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 2133 4x4GB DDR3 SDRAM
  • GPU: XFX Double Dissipation AMD R9 290, 4GB
    • Gonna wait for the 4K market to mature a bit before going there. The most this card will have to handle is dual 2560x1440. Would only ever be gaming on a single monitor.
  • SSD: Samsung 840 EVO, 250GB, SATA III
    • OS drive for Linux/Windows
    • Gonna add a second 1TB SSD for games & additional programs when a good one can be had for <$500. For now, gonna use an old Caviar Black from current build for this purpose.
  • HDD: Western Digital Black, 3TB, 7200 RPM, SATA III
    • Gonna store all my documents, pictures, music, movies, TV Series, etc.
    • I've got backup covered, so that's not a concern.
    • Reliability is my biggest concern. I have never had an issue with my Caviar Blacks, but feel free to suggest other drives if you think they would be more reliable. Do not care about cheaper.
  • PSU: Taken from my old build for now... (Corsair HX1000)
    • Going to use a electricity usage monitor to figure out about how much power the new system actually draws and later buy a new PSU accordingly.

~$1900 USD for the core components. That's fine.

I think I have decided on getting a CaseLabs Merlin SM5 to put this all in. Fits microATX, extremely flexible/customizable, lots of room, CaseLabs build quality, and sexy as hell. Very expensive, but I might never have to buy another case thumb.gif . I'm air cooling for now, but it will be a great case if/when I decide to liquid cool in the future; which I might do when I upgrade my graphics cards in a couple of years or whatever. Anyway, after fans and shipping, and whatnot, that's another ~$500. I'll report the exact cost of the total build when I'm done.

Thanks for all thoughts, comments and concerns.

It's going to be a while, but I'll update this thread with pictures and all those sorts of goodies when I finally build it.

I had a pair of EVOs and the M5G motherboard and they suddenly, after 2 days of working fine quit being recognized. I did a quick search and it was related to the UEFI on a pretty random sampling of boards, I recommend you go with the 840 Pro, it's faster anyway.

@greywarden, Thanks for the heads up. I'll look around to see if anyone has had problems with Samsung EVO + ASUS Maximus VI Gene. Especially since a second EVO would be a likely candidate for a second 1TB SSD for games and such.

@TheDarkBeast, yeah I think that's going to be a very nice set of DRAM. Sure it's double the price of some other 4x4GB 2133 sets I could get with looser timings and higher voltages, but I don't build new systems very often rolleyes.gif
