its been 3-4 days since i had it

i tried reseating the card, still same problem, only happens when gaming or at least when the card is doing more intense stuff, when i stop gaming and alt to task bar

the noise immediately stops, so its not the fans for sure

Probably coil whine. Is it bad enough that you can hear it while it's inside your case and case fans are spinning?

This is called coil whine, happens to alot of devices Graphics cards, Power supplies, motherboards anything can do it. Only fix is either get over it, RMA it and hope the replacement doesn't' have it (it can happen to brand new items or old items), or get louder case fans.

yea its still pretty audible with the case closed and what not, id say my head is just under 5 feet away from the case, although i do know that sound travels up but still
its kinda loud

i think ill upload a video soon on it, hopefully my camera is good enough, it sounds more of a buzz though, like a bee buzzing inside
i seen a video on coil whine, except the card sounds like its singing a melody off pitch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP73edpQwgc

mine doesnt sing at all, just buzz's kinda loud like a bug

Coil whine as far as I know doesn't affect performance, its just a sound that some people can't tolerate. You just got the card right? If the place you got it from will replace it I would do that, pain to go without your new toy for a few weeks but you might have problems RMAing with Powercolor for coil whine, a lot of manufacturers won't replace for coil whine because the card still works fine.

hmm i suppose the card will be okay, if its just coil whine then fine, im not a sensitive ear guy, i mean its audible but thats okay

im still mighty impressed by the card, playing dayz at 1680p with ultra settings it looks so nice, yea i know, i said 1680 biggrin.gif

my monitor can only do 1680, i saw i could supersample, i think its supersample anyway, lets me select higher res and it says +200% headscratch.gif
still the temps are really nice so far, around 50-60C and vrm1 goes about 40-55
vr2 is around 30-45

all of this with the fan cranked at default 30 %, eventually she starts kicking up to 40% and i can hear the fans
before that just sounds like a minty gust of wind in my case, not too heavy not too light
i tried playing at 1440 res and the fan doesnt crank on ultra settings
i have yet to mine though, might try it tonight

is there a way to change the default fan settings btw? i tried amd catalyst but it only gives manual control

Aren't the temps amazing? This is the best cooling powerful gpu I've ever owned or even heard of. In the past the only way I've gotten temps this low is to undervolt and underclock. But with this card I can raise vddc and clocks and temps are still under 70c across the board. Simply astounding.

You can't do custom fan curves in CCC, you can choose between whatever curve is written in bios or set a fixed rpm. You can switch the card to the other bios which is the quiet mode than has the fans max at a lower rpm, the default is the performance bios. I don't know what the max is on performance bios though, it's never gone above 57% for me. Another option is to flash the bios with the bios from a different 290 brand that has a fan curve you prefer. I'm thinking about flashing the quiet mode to the Tri-X bios for the lower voltage.

Coil whine varies from a barely audible buzz to a loud scream, sounds like you have a very mild case.

cool then my card should last thumb.gif

wondering would it void warranty to underclock? is it same thing considered as overclocking? i just wanted to lower the 1040 default clock and lower the temps a tad bit biggrin.gif

I don't remember coil whine when I had my PCS+. Must be chance.

Afaik underclocking or undervolting does no damage whatsoever to a card so it shouldn't void warranty. But in terms of warranty, you would always want to reset everything to a factory state so they can't claim you did something wrong.

This card comes stock with a +50 vddc adjust. If you use Afterburner or Trixx, first time you load the app after installing it you will see the +50 adjustment. What you can do is, use either of these apps instead of CCC, and lower the vddc adjust to +0. (You can't go negative vddc on this card.) That will reduce temps significantly, much more so than lowering clocks, which doesn't do that much, you would normally lower clocks in order to sustain a lower voltage.

Depending on your card, you might have to lower the clocks, it's all luck though. My card can actually run a slight overclock at 0 vddc, at 1080 core and the stock mem of 1350.
