PowerColor PCS+ R9 290? - Page 34

Something is definitely jacked with my Valley/extremehd scores, was browsing around and I should be getting around 60fps at stock, I'm getting 63fps, which is a pretty big difference in Valley. But the discrepancy disappears as clocks increase. At 1200/1500 I get 71.2fps/2980 (second run 71.1fps/2976), that's pretty much in line with your score with cpu probably making up the difference. In any event any Valley scores I've posted should be disregarded as aberrant.

so which card is best for xfire without water?

TIA

PCS+ at 52mm is just too thick for crossfire. Magiccase posted this earlier, you can see that there is not enough space for the top card to get intake air if you crossfire two of these:

If you used a standard 38mm thickness card like the Tri-X it looks much much better:

Of the 38mm cards the Tri-X has the best cooling, so that's your best bet. You might even want to get 2 Tri-Xs and skip PCS+ altogether if crossfiring, since identical cards are better than different brands for a variety of reasons. Problem with the Tri-X is a length of 305mm, which many mid towers cannot accommodate without removing any hdd cages. So check your clearances.

The Gigabyte can work as upper card in crossfire, earlier BIOS had fan curves set too low, but BIOS v3 I believe fixes this. Prozillah is crossfiring a pair of Gigabytes with no issues, and Lawson is using a Giga as gpu1 just fine.

yea it is possible. however I am searching for crossfire results too but couldnt find any. the current improvement is only reported by someone using a single card.

quote: UPDATES!: So I went to CDL Trading and the tech guy updated my card's bios. Works well now! the temps are in control and the core speed doesn't throttle. Apparently there was a bios issue for the first few batches where the fan doesnt perform correctly.

It's fixed now my idle is at 42 degrees, web surfing and youtube at 46 degrees and furmark max at 79 degrees! not noisy plus no throttling.. not a bad result in hot n humid singapore weather

thanks! I saw that pic too and I kinda shocked about the space in between. definitely not for crossfiring. gigabyte at where I live costs about 25 dollars more expensive than sapphire with 3 years warranty. I have concerns about the crossfire performance, temp and noise. maybe I can pm Prozillah.

I am using air carbide 540 casing.

heres my 3d mark scores, link for proof (no extreme, i didnt buy), using pcs 290 stock clocks elpida ram
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/2681148

if anyone wants to shed some light on these scores much appreciated, i dont really understand the significance of my scores
whether or not they should be higher or lower

ill post results anyway

firestrike 1.1 = 9109

gpu score - 11005
physics score 8358
combine score - 4223

and measy peasy other 2 tests

cloudgate 1.1 = 20164

icestorm 1.2 = 124698

my pcs 290 is on stock clocks also

At stock right? You're where you should be. Reference 290 at 947/1250 scores 10000 gpu in fire strike. Powercolor, at 1040/1350, should be scoring about 1000 pts higher than that, or 11000, which is what you're getting. Some folks are getting 500-700 pts below that though which is too low. Good physics score btw, what do you have an overclocked 4670?

i havent overclocked anything, i have my 3770k at stock 3.5ghz, i only bought the aftermarket cooler because i hate the stock fans, the cpu goes past 60 C sometimes near 70
with the aftermarket coolers , in this case i have kraken x40, i can keep the cpu under 50 C on load, maybe 55ish
i know folks usually buy extra aftermarket this or that just to overclock

still, i remember some study couple years back about hard drives and temperature, keeping them too cool in 30's had shorter lifespan vs hardware in 50's

so for me i have a rule for builds and thats not too cold and not too hot

im glad my card is performing where it should be, if it werent for the rattling i get at high fan speeds, gaming i dont experience this problem, only mining or supersampling resolution too high
the mining isnt that good though, i should easily break 800 kilohash, cant seem to get past 740, its possible if i downclock

does downclocks and undervolts void warranty? could i just flick the bios switch in case i mess the card up?

Wow I didn't know the 3770k packed that much punch at stock, you're getting better physics than my 4670k @ 4.7.

Also is anyone having a problem with their card not downclocking? After I use afterburner the cards core clock does not downclock to idle speeds. The memory does so I'm not sure whats going on.

lol its funny they increased price for it, all the parts i picked for my pc last year have increased in price

the powersupply cost me 300 sharp, now its like 399

the ram i bought is like 100 bucks more, then the cpu is 30-40 more then what i paid. People arent even buying corsair dominator platinum, ax1200i's and 3770k as much as amd cards
lousy vendors

About the same as his actually. But he's running 3.5ghz, I'm running 4.6. And my 4670k even at 4.6 is definitely bottle necking my 290 crossfire. Some folks claim this can't be the case but I'm seeing it with my own eyes. I definitely should have gone with a 4770k. Beyond that cost gets prohibitive. But right now I'm pairing $1000 worth of gpu with $200 worth of cpu, I should have paid the extra $100 for the 4770k.

But Claw, if you've got a kraken, you should oc. I'm just running the basic Noctua D14 and temps are quite good. If I had a kraken x40 I'd be pushing that cpu.
