PowerColor PCS+ R9 290? - Page 36

just thought id share my card is getting 900 kilohash while mining, not getting shares as often as lower hashrates with higher thread concurrenies
the odd part is the thread concurrency is really low so i dunno if its really paying off or not

Guru3d's thermal imaging of the pcs+ cooler in action.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/powercolor_radeon_r9_290x_pcs_review,11.html

This cooler is stupidly good. I mean just look at those images. If you've seen FLIR images of gpus before you know they're usually a sea of red and orange. See any red or orange in there? Awesome.

I did contact the service which is in Turkey not usa . They asked me to send the card to them.
i ll send it to rma tomorrow. Also asked them to check this thread to see others who are experiencing the same problem with all hynix equipped cards. I hope they ll adress the problem and replace my card with an elpida one.

I have a 290 PCS+ coming over the next few days. How to i check what sort of RAM I have, and whether there's a problem - benchmarking I guess for the latter? But is there a quick way to check the RAM make without taking the card apart (and presumably invalidating the warranty)?

Thanks/

Thanks. And is there any consensus on there being under-performing cards - are there some with the hynix RAM that are performing fine, or do I need to be concerned if I see hynix? I read this thread but wasn't sure if it was a few one-offs that were having problems.

As far as I know it is only some hynix cards that have an issue. This review shows a hynix card with the issue http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/powercolor_radeon_r9_290x_pcs_review,1.html. But this review http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/R9_290X_PCS_Plus/4.html and this review http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/powercolor_r9_290x_pcs/2.htm both have hynix cards that perform normally.

Thanks. So I guess to test it when my card arrives, I should check if the RAM is hynix. And then run benchmarks and see if I score higher than stock, or below...

basically, just run 3dmark tests, the important one is firestrike test, its the most demanding one then compare your score to stock 290s

or just use my post

i have an elpida version running at stock clocks

if anyone wants to shed some light on these scores much appreciated, i dont really understand the significance of my scores
whether or not they should be higher or lower

ill post results anyway

firestrike 1.1 = 9109

gpu score - 11005
physics score 8358
combine score - 4223

and measy peasy other 2 tests

cloudgate 1.1 = 20164

icestorm 1.2 = 124698

Ok regarding the problem some folks are having with underperforming cards, here's an interesting nugget:

Here is the text in case that's hard to read:

Not sure which it is tbh but from my limited experience it seems that some cards, a relatively small but not insignificant number, have "weak" VRAM ICs which are the cause of the problem(s). Unfortunatly didn't know of the nature of the problem originally so didn't check what brand were on the cards I had a go at troubleshooting but the replacement cards (that work fine) I've since found out are both using Hynix brand ICs

Good find. Looks like a person on page 4 is having same issues as some of us. Im in the process of talking to tech support so i'm gonna send this along.

Also do you know what the VRAM IC's are?
