Allowed ripple: <120mV
Preferred ripple: <80mV
Info: The +12V rail is the main power rail in modern computers. Modern computers draw 70%-95% of their power from the +12V rail, and the power available at +12V should make up at least 80% of the total wattage, preferably 90% in enthusiast units.

@ taem, currently hitting 11.5v flat, still within variance but I've never seen a card do that out of my 7970, 7950, 2x780's, and my ref 290. Minimum they would hit ~11.7. I was also getting electrical interference through my speakers which has never occured before, and started when the 290 pcs was installed. Low framerates in firestrike also seem to loosely correspond to the minimum voltage dips.

** Just finished a firestrike run on my Tri-x, gpu score of 11146 @ 1040/1350, minimum 12v rail hit 11.75v.

Well

Got a reply from RMA.

We have tested the card and no problem:) They didn't even bother to compare scores or fps with other 290's . Just put it into memtest run some benchmarks games etc... since they dont see any artifact or black screen= card is fine. ^

If you guys get any positive response from rma in your country please post here im going to send your report to them.

Shame. I feel like i just burned $500, hopefully when I give them a call they'll actually listen to my/our argument as I don't want to waste 20$ for shipping just to have them send my card back to me.

i think the variances in the 12v is probably due to higher than normal clock speeds and possibly cheap components hence the glue on the chokes.

thats my take on it.

i remember when i wanted to buy the asus 290x matrix rog, the heatsink was a triple slot cooler as well i think

anyway they stopped selling the card they also had a bad batch but it was really bad, and out of the few reviews all of them had problems on newegg, like major problems.
the clockspeeds were pretty damn high on the matrix rog as well.

someone should test the pcs 290 with lower clockspeeds and see how the 12v reacts
its either too high clock speeds OR cheap components or both
at the time when i bought it, it was so much cheaper than the trixx, now the trixx is 20 bux more on newegg, the only thing i can take from this card is the exceptional cooling performance.

........exxxxcccccccccept for the vrm 1 which gets so hot under mining conditions, up to 82 C
i have to keep my side panel open and use a fan to keep her under 80 damn.

they could have easily increased length say 2 more inches and create another opening on the top of the heatsink to allow the heat disperse easier, i suspect the hotter running vrm is somewhere to the bottom of the card.

The PCS+ uses the same components as the reference 290/x boards, and the glue reduces coil whine. My guess is there's something off with the bios.

I don't think its a bios issue as there are people with normal function pcs cards, unless it truly is hynix specific. I talked with an rma rep today and all they said is they would replace my card but no guarantee on what mem ics it would come with. He did briefly mention waiting for a bios update but at the time I wasn't thinking, I guess more waiting to see what happens.

well that makes me feel better, if its the exact same board then somethings up with the cards thats all, nothing major although major problem for some
are you absolutely sure though that every spec and spic piece of silicon on that board is the exact same source as the reference 290s?
from the chokes to the capacitors, etc

so the board is made by the same manufacturer? and they just slap on a brand new aftermarket cooler?

That's great that they're working with you on this. I didn't think they would since the card is functional. Glad to be wrong, and good to hear powercolor is a responsible outfit. They've really won me over with the 270x devil and the pcs+.

We'll see how it goes, shipping it out tomorrow. I wrote down all of the cards info including serial numbers, he said they would replace the card but I still think it's questionable once they get the card and test it. Typed out a nice page long problem description and threw it in the box as they requested so hopefully some of my testing and records will hold some weight.

good luck

IMO a card performing %10 worse than it should, must be considered as a defect card no matter what kind of pcb, circuits memory etc it is using. In this situation the same card with diffrent memory chips have %10 diffrence in performance. This is unacceptable.

But rma here told me to contact powercolor directly for performance issues? (really:)) which I did yesterday and got a reply from local representive.
Told the story from beginning directed them to this forum, guru3d review etc. to adress the problem and asked kindly to replace my pcs+ with a elpida pcs+ or write me a service report so i can return it and get another 290. She told me they contacted powercolor about the problem.

No reply yet.
