PowerColor PCS+ R9 290? - Page 42

I don't know if Powercolor wants me to say this but....... I recieved my PCS+ R9 290 as a replacement for a retail R9 290 that died. Due to the crytocoin crap and the holidays ( cards not being produced I was told ) Powercolor offered me this as a replacement........ and I said, um, sure. Now, it took a while, 6+ weeks not counting shipping, but they took care of me.

So be a bit patient with them.

So, I got one with Elpida memory. Using Afterburner (worked the same with Trixx) I'm running 1135/1575 +75 mV, +50 Powerlimit(stock with this card) with the default fan settings. No throttling. The best I got with the original R9 290 also with Elpida memory was 1097/1500 @ 65% fan ( can you say noisy?) PCS+ is silent at idle but.....gets a bit loud - nothing like the stock card - at load. At load I'm running around 85% fan speed @ 72C. My VRM temps are #1 - 80-85C+; #2 rarely exceeds 60C.

BTW, this system is running eyefinity, which I have found really increases the VRM#1 temps. The card can overclock higher, but the core requires more mV and VRM#1 responds as you would expect. I haven't maxed out the memory, either.

I tried to ajust the fan speeds using Trixx and AB, but the moment you drop fan speeds VRM#1 goes nuts - even dropping speed just 10% (bearly audible difference) VRM#1 goes over 100C. If you think about it, it's understandable. The good news is when I'm actually using the card - I play games and the sound system or headphones more than cover the sound. I couldn't say that about my previous R9 290.

Still, I wonder if installing an Kraken G10 with an AIO ( done this with muliple cards - with help from Dwood) and having that 92mm fan directed onto the VRM heatsink - with nothing - read the incredible heatsink covering the VRM#1 heatsink.....

Just a thought......

Was there any news on the possible BIOS fix for the cards that were performing below stock levels?

a 7870 tahiti le chips when overclocked @ 1200mhz almost scores as good as 880mhz 7970
yet 7970 costs triple

when you pay premium price for a r9 290 you expect it to perform as a real 290.

yeah, im not really disagreeing, it just doesnt bother me now. ill be waiting if any updates would come up, i have the extended warranty here in asia so if time comes that driver/bios updates wont fix this, ill just send it back to the vendor..

Wow those temps are really high. I don't run Eyefinity, just dual monitors, and gaming on one screen. Still, those temps are so high for this cooler. I'm usually in the 50s, if it's a really demanding game that keeps the core loaded I might go into the mid 60s on vrm1. And this is with fan on auto, doesn't go over 57-59%. I know Eyefinity raises temps, but by that much?

I'll check on 1 monitor, but, yes, Eyefinity gaming really ups the temps.....Did the same with my HD7870, too.....Got a 1440p monitor I'll play with a bit.

Finally received mine R9 290 PCS+
Memory is Hynix.

It is really the coolest running card in my mining rig so far ! Very impressive.

congrats thumb.gif you should post some benchmarks, curious to see what your scores are with the hynix

I have the hynix version.

As far as I recall, I got approx. 61 fps on valley on stock clocks and default 3d app. Settings.

But my 12v seems to always be 11.75v.

Also, I've tried overclocking but I've only managed 1150/1400 on stock voltages. The moment I apply memory at 1410, my PC freezes lol. How much mV should I raise to get around 1500 memory clocks?

I'd suggest you use the 13.12 drivers. It's more stable for OCing.

what Tobiman said and . . . you raised the Power Limit? if not, max it out.
