I find it more and more difficult to believe that the root cause of the problem is just a batch of cards with a "bad bios" issue.

where is this spreadsheet?

Thanks ^^^^

@ Schussnik, you can add this if you like.

Comments:

New BIOS made no difference,
Driver 13.12 is 150 points higher than 14.3
Scores increased by shutting down Sidebar ecte.
Seems a little low, but acceptable.

Here's a little edit of my unlock guide in the 290 unlock thread for those who are trying to flash their card:

Guide (Click to show)
Dump your bios using GPU-Z (who knows, you might want to keep it for something...). Just click the little icon at the end of the bios version section, and give the bios a name. If you have a 290x and you want to back up your stock bioses, then make sure to flip the switch on your graphics card to get the other one (switch near video ouputs is quiet, opposite side is performance. 290 is same bios on either switch).

Download this:

FlashFiles.zip 942k .zip file

ATIFlash 4.17, HP Format Tool, and Windows 98 boot files

Extract w98 files to a folder

Open up HPUSBDisk.exe
Select your flash drive and Fat32
Check "Create a DOS startup disk", and browse to the extracted w98 files

Format your drive, and throw on ATIFlash.exe and the bios you want to flash your card with. Make sure if the bios's file name is longer than 8 characters to rename it to something shorter. It'll take out bit of hassle when trying to flash it.

Turn off computer, and decide what bios switch you want to flash the new bios on. If you have a 290x and you got 2 different bios files (I don't know if you did or not) for performance and quiet, then I'd recommend you flash the bioses to their respective switch locations.

Turn on computer and boot from your usb drive
type in DIR to verify files, and to get the names

type in flash.exe -f -p 0 biosname.rom

Give it a couple seconds and restart computer

Once on desktop, wait for the drivers to reinstall, if they do, and restart computer again.

If you want to flash both switches (PCS+ 290 owners), flip the switch to the opposite side and repeat.

I would use atiwinflash, but I like doing it the manual way tongue.gif

Have you received your 290x yet?

Just a little update. Tested the card a bit more, this thing clocks pretty well... Gotten up to 1260/1500 (lock ups past 1500, pl adjustment may help but not running ab right now), still somewhat lower performance than my tri-x.

Highest gpu score out of all my 290s on air now: 12447

75% fan speed, +200mv, both core and vrms under 70c after 30 minutes of runs.
