Custom hard drive enclosure

Thread Starter
I'm making a custom hard drive enclosure that will completely encase the hard drives (3 of them). I don't plan on modifying the enclosure to incorporate a fan and as such there will be no air flowing over the drives. I've been reading that hard drives will work fine up to 40°C but I'm unsure how hot 3 drives in an enclosure like mine will get. Can a hard drive work with 0 ventilation? What about 3 in an enclosed space? Thanks.

Not recommended.  HDDs don't need very much airflow to keep them cool, but many HDDs do need some airflow.  I have a regular 7200 RPM HDD that gets too hot to touch even when sitting out in the open plugged into a USB dock.
