Ultimate Rig(s) Build Winner!

Thread Starter
So I found out about a week ago that I apparently won the Ultimate Rig Build competition back in September redface.gif. I can't thank the gracious admin (and the rest of the staff) enough for making this possible!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just received the $ today so it quickly became shopping time. It was awesome but also disheartning to see $2400 in my paypal go to basically zero within a hour. tongue.gif I still am in complete disbelief that that amount of $ x 12 was given away in that contest. I wish I could personally shake the benefactor's hand!

I don't want to disappoint anyone here but this will NOT be the super uber best custom build around. If you're looking for that then you might want to resort to checking out some of the other winners like Astonished's, Valgaur's or Magical Eskimo's build. However this will be a TWO for one build log!

I was lucky enough to already obtain my "Ultimate" rig a year or two ago (sig rig). Therefore I will be taking $500 off the budget and putting it into my FreeNAS build that I just started up. I'm stoked to learn the ins and outs of this system. It pretty much falls directly under my carrier path in school.

The rest of it will go towards a backup build. My good friend who I have grown up with gaming has wanted nothing but a gaming PC since the dawn of time. Sadly even today he is barley getting by with bills. It would be pretty awesome to game with him on the ultimate gaming machine (considering I don't have a single IRL friend that PC games). Therefore I will be letting him borrow this PC until/if I have a use for it. I hope I'm not breaking the TOS of the contest with this. It will continue to be "mine" and I have demanded that he become an active member of OCN as long as he has the PC.

FreeNAS Build
(AMD based but the main build is Intel so hopefully this is an appropriate post)...
Parts Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
  • AMD A4-3300 CPU (might be selling to replace for am2/am3 that supports ECC)
  • MSI A55M-P33 MOBO (might be selling to replace for am2/am3 that supports ECC)
  • G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) RAM (might be selling to replace for ECC RAM)
  • Rosewill RV350 350w PSU
  • 4 x 2TB Seagate NAS HDD
  • HEC Vigilance Black Case
  • 2 x Kingwin 5.25 bay to 3.5 adapters (the case only has two 3.5 drive bays but plenty of 5.25 bays that wouldn't be used otherwise).

Wish I would have known beforehand to avoid the APU because of ECC RAM compatibility. At least nothing on the NAS will be deathly critical.

Things in bold were purchased with the contest $.

Starting to look good

Spoke to soon. Why would I chose a completely non-modular PSU for matx?

Cable management somehow successful. Still have a ton of cables to hide.

A ziptipe along with an evenly cut piece of the mobo box cardboard did the trick.

IT POST!

Completion
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

As I said, parts were ordered today so stay tuned for build pics!

GIVE AWAYS!!!!!!
So I got some 8GB (4GBX2) of ECC RAM originally for the FreeNAS build. Of course it didn't work with the mobo so I'm giving that away HERE

I am also getting Assassin's Creed 4 with the 780 and $25 of credit for Hawken with the SSD. I will be giving both of these away in the freebies soon! Links will be posted here when it goes up.

THANKS AGAIN OCN!!!!!!!!!!!

I defiantly want to install a window into the side panel of the n200. I guess I would cut it open right where it starts to indent outwards.

Even so, not sure if I have the tools for such a task. Would I just go to the local hardware store and pick up some plexiglass? Any suggestions? If all else fails I would be interested in finding an artisan on the forums that could craft it for me (at a price of course).

Again It won't be some crazy custom water rigs. They will however be cleanly built and very capable devices in both of their native environments.

Did you buy it already ? If you want a case with a window, would you not just pick a different case ?
Something like the the Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 ? It already has one.
It's a far better case. More options for better cable management,
better airflow and is great for a potential water-cooling setup later down the line if you want.
The money you'd spend on the N200 + plexi + cutting would likely amount to more than what you'd spend on the R2.
Also, by cutting the N200 at the indent you're losing a certain amount of width too.

Think about it thumb.gif

Everything was purchased at time of OP so the n200 is already on it's way here. The loss in width shouldn't be an issue but I'll double check it beforehand to make sure it doesn't interfere with anything. What's going in that case now is probably what will be in there forever. Any upgrades will more than likely make their way to the sig rig.

So thanks, that probably would have been the way to go originally if I would have known about that case but my original question still stands. I imagine it's a big hassle to ship back a case. I saw that they actually do have a windowed panel advertised on the official page of the n200 but can't find a single location to purchase it alone or just the windowed version of the case in general.

You could ask the Cooler Master Rep here on the forum. He might be able to help.
Maybe buying just the windowed side panel would be a cheaper option, that is IF they're available.

Apparently the windowed version is not available in NA. The customer agent did give me some good news. They put in a request to have the window panel alone available on the usa cooler master parts store.

We shall see..

Also apparently I need to get rid of my CPU and go for something that supports ECC RAM in my NAS build. This is because I planned on using ZFS between the 4 HDDs. I wonder if their is another FM1 socket CPU that supports ECC RAM or if that chipset even supports it at all? Time to do some research.

Edit: Yup, FM1 does not support ECC at all. Means I'm gonna have to sell the new CPU/MOBO for one that does support ECC.
