First Watercooling Project - Page 2

just got most of my parts in, just waiting on the OS and the CPU Block, I am however confused on the thermal compound, not sure if I should avoid compounds that use silver considering my block has nickel, and which thermal solution would be the best route.

any advice or suggestions?

Also, as far as coolant goes, I'm also thinking I shouldn't use a kill strip with distilled water because of the nickel and was considering using the Mayhem X1 Clear Premixed coolant, would also love some thoughts on this as well.

~Thanks.

re: Thermal compound, it really doesn't matter what you use because the TIM never comes in contact with water. The problem with galvanic interactions is that they are facilitated by water. But since the TIM is on the surface of the block, and never touches water, it doesn't matter what you use. AS5 or MX4 are always good choices.

re: coolant, if you're using a premix, you most likely shouldn't use any biocide. It's usually IN the premix already, and using any additional biocide is a bad idea. If you go with distilled water (which is what I advocate), I'd recommend using Copper Sulphate (PT Nuke, Dead Water, etc). You could use a kill coil or silver bullet, but IMO that's just introducing another metal to your loop. If your loop is predominantly copper/nickel, then using Copper Sulfate keeps things simple. I could be wrong here, though -- to keep things as simple as possible I went with an all copper (+brass) loop so Copper Sulfate was the obvious choice for me. Bringing nickel into the mix might change things a little? I'm sure somebody with more experience with Nickel in their loop will speak up.

No, nickel and copper will be fine.

As for coolant I have decided to use Mayhems x1 clear concentrate mixed with Mayhems Ultra Pure H2o. I also have Indigo Xtreme XS for the TIM
post #16 of 24
Just get DI water. You don't need to pay money for Ultra Pure H2O.

Sorry, quality is pretty bad, using my S4 to take pics

Still waiting on my Koolance 380i to show up in the mail, my postman returned it to sender because he thought I moved for some reason...

Got a warped bend in one of the angles, waiting on another tube to arrive to fix it, meanwhile its up and running. Just got to figure out why I'm idle at 60 degrees Celsius.

Correct me if I'm wrong but your list of components mentioned compression fittings, it didn't think you could use them for ridged tube builds

Why aren't you taking advantage of the waterblock on the VRM? Are you getting the IDLE reading in BIOS or Windows?
