Is 4 GB necassary?

Thread Starter
I am planning to upgrade to a conroe which will result in me needing new DDR2 memory. I was planning on getting 1gb with plans to upgrade to 2gb. I was wondering how soon 4gb will be necessary as that would affect whether I buy 2 512mb DIMM's or 1 1gb DIMM?

Also how much of a difference will I see between DDR2 800 and DDR2 667.

Nope, it's not necessary in the least amount right now. In fact, it can be counterproductive. If your computer will never utilized more than 2GB, and you have 4GB of space, it has to look through all 4GB to find what it wants. That would take more time, make sense?

When OCing you will see a big difference between the two. But if you get good DDR2 667, you can OC it to DDR2 800 speeds easily.

You won't need 4GB until after Vista comes out. And even then it won't be a requirement, just a recommendation I believe.

2 gig will do you fine for a year or two and if you are get 1gig now and 1gig later get 1gig modules
EDIT: the only difference you wil see with the ddr2-800 is that you can overclock farther without a divider on the ram for example ddr2-667 will go to 333MHz without a divder and ddr2-800 will go to 400MHz

4GB will be completely useless, I barely use 60% of my current 2GB even when playing FEAR or Oblivion use maybe 1.0-1.4 total RAM used including all other windows programs.

Like Intervention said, 2 GB is still alot of RAM. Also from the project requirements of Crysis make it look like it only requires 2 GB of RAM. Just a little heads up.
