However i do have a rig right now with with 2x r9 290x and a 4930k with a xfx 850w black edition and it's silent. If your max intention is 3x gpu I'd pickup an evga supernova 1300w g2. If you plan on getting 4x i would wait for the ax1500i or the new evga power supply.

I've heard bad things about the EVGA NEX 1500 watt.

Both in reviews and from a couple of people I knew who owned them. The other EVGA power supplies seem to be pretty good though.

The HX1000 probably isn't the OP's best choice. I'd recommend something good in the 1000W+ range, preferably 1200W+ range if you are going to be doing very aggressive overclocking. Personally I'd get one of Seasonic's PSUs, or a brand that re-sells Seasonics. Enermax is pretty solid too.

If you can afford it really the best PSUs to get are Super Flowers. The Leadex Platinum series has a 9.9 rating on jonnyguru I believe. THey look fantastic too with the lighted modular connections on the unit and they are the OEM psu maker for all these other companies. You can buy them on overclockers.co.uk and they are priced the same way it's just that you will have to pay in Pounds and probably a lot for shipping and maybe duties.

Will my HX850 be enough for crossfire 290x overclocked to 1200 and a 3770k@4.6 soon to be running X99?

It will be close. I got 850 Watt
Out of the wall with a 750w golden
Psu. Start with low oc.

I'd also recommend a Cooler Master v1000, it's been a fantastic PSU for me. I'm running an AMD FX 9370 OC'd and a r9-290x right now. It's performed flawlessly, the modular cables are also fantastic, I love the PCI-E ones.
