Talk me out of building a new rig

Thread Starter
As the title implies, I probably should be talked out of building a new rig. I know it’s a bit confusing since it may appear that I already know I don’t need to build a new rig by the title of this thread but bear with me.

I upgraded to a new rig around June of last year. The specs are as follows.

  • Corsair 900D
  • Seasonic-X 1250 PSU
  • Asus Maximus Extreme V (E-ATX)
  • 3770K @ 4.5ghz
  • 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600
  • EVGA GTX 690 <——Can’t get stable overclocks
  • Corsair H100i (just added two more NF-F12’s yesterday for push/pull)
  • 1x 128GB 840 Pro SSD
  • 1x 512GB 840 Pro SSD
  • All fans in the case replaced with Noctua NF-F12’s
  • NZXT Sentry Mix 2 Fan Controller
  • Samsung S27B970D 27” 1440p monitor

Below are some reasons I want to upgrade.

  1. I want to downsize to a standard ATX motherboard.
  2. I want to be able to use my Corsair 550D case.
  3. I want a near silent computer when idle, I don’t care about during gaming (maybe my expectations for a quiet computer are too high). My PC is about six feet from where I sleep and it would be nice to be able to leave the computer on at night.
  4. My curiosity about how quiet the 550D can get.
  5. I like having the latest technologies.
  6. While I like my GTX 690, it really only shines when in SLI. I’ve noticed SLI has more than its fair share of issues in games (Battlefield 4 comes to mind), while some games don’t even support SLI. The 690 was my first SLI card; I used to buy the most powerful single GPU in the past. Most of my flight sims don’t support SLI so having an ultra powerful single GPU would prove more beneficial.

What I am looking to upgrade to based on a couple weeks of research on here and other places is:

  • Corsair 550D case (already own it)
  • EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 - This seems to be highly recommended and quiet.
  • Asus Maximus VI Formula
  • 4770K (I would want to OC a bit)
  • 16GB RAM - I cannot decide on the best speed yet
  • EVGA 780 Ti
  • Corsair H100i - I had the Noctua NH-D14 on my i5 2500k in the 550D and it wasn’t as quiet as I hoped so I’m sticking with the H100i.
  • 1x 128GB 840 Pro SSD - Any faster SSD’s out there?
  • 1x 512GB 840 Pro SSD
  • All fans in the case will be replaced with Noctua NF-F12’s
  • Fan controller that has temperature probes with optional auto fan control would be neat but I cannot find any consensus on the best. Then again the motherboard controller may be better, I haven’t found an answer to that yet either. A hardware fan controller that has corresponding software would be even better. I’m not huge on 100% software based fan controls.

That is my tentative upgrade list. Anything is subject to change if there are better suggestions. The only exception is the Maximus VI Formula, that board looks rock solid and I like that. I also looked for other cases but Corsair cases are the only ones I like because they are so solid and are clean cut; I do not like any cases with rounded corners and other doodads like some NZXT cases I’ve seen.

So, ignoring the fact that it may not make financial sense to upgrade, what technical reasons do I have not to upgrade? Reasons like “the 4770K will be a minor performance difference” or “it won’t be any quieter than my current setup” are the types of reasons I wouldn’t upgrade.

I am not a serious overclocker, I don't customize my PC with serious watercooling or anything like that. Hell, I don't even like seeing the inside of my case (ok, sometimes it is neat).I like low maintenance off the shelf items. All I try to do is mix and match the right items to get the best performance.

Hopefully that wasn't a TL;DR post. Thanks for listening!
Meh.

Do you have the money to upgrade? If so, why do you want to be talked out of it? You like new tech, so buy new tech. tongue.gif

You could really get pretty much all of what you would get out of that out of just a new MB and graphics card.

I say do it! I can't see an technical reason not to. My only question is why you tend to overkill the PSU so much? You do not need anything even close to those watts. In fact, since you aren't (by your own admission) an avid OCer, you could run that system on half as much PSU.

Got my tax return and it was a lot more than I expected. Probably better ways I could spend it though.

True but it would bother me seeing my 900D not being used for something. I do reuse parts from time to time but I spent a lot of time and money building out for the 900D.

I've always been terrible at choosing the right PSU. I've used the calculators out there but I always choose to be safe than sorry. I guess I need to know what a baseline for a 1000 watt or more rig is. I also picked that PSU because words such as quiet, good parts, efficient have been thrown around. I wish the Corsair PSU's that integrate with their corsair link software were recommended. I like the idea of monitoring a PSU via software.

You should head over to the Power Supply sub section and ask Shilka and TwoCables for their input, They can certainly set you up with some solid recommendations.

The 1000w is fine, especially if you take an EVGA 780Ti classified (which I recommend) and overclock it like crazy. biggrin.gif
You will need the power with that.

True but the OP clearly states he is not a serious overclocker. Look, this is OCN and overkill is the word of the day for most here simply because we can. I just floated the idea that perhaps his PSU needs didn't really add up to the PSU he was looking to buy.
