ASRock FM2+ Extreme 6+ VRM Heatsink.

Hey guys, need some advice (...again).

My new ASRock motherboard was delivered yesterday and I'm loving it so far (so much better than my MSI FM2-A85XA-G65) and I'm thinking of OC-ing my 5800K but the motherboard has minimal cooling on the VRMs but the review sites I've looked on don't address the issue and say the motherboard is a good overclocker.

The UEFI has Overtemp protection settings for the motherboard and CPU but the heatsink doesn't look as if it can cool the VRMs effectively at high power draw, what do you guys think? Will it be an issue?

Put the fan from an Arctic L2 GPU cooler over the VRMs at 12v, testing 4.6GHz now (seems stable) and I'm going to push 4.7GHz.

The CPU is stable at 4.6GHz @ 1.54V and hits 50C under Prime95.

Without the fan over the VRMs the temp sits at 72C idle and reach >93C (stopped the test because the temps we're still rising at 93).
The VRMs (according to HWiNFO) sit at 62C idle and under load for about 10 minutes are at 76-80C, so there's a huge improvement just from positioning a fan over the heatsink. Now all I need to do is devise a way of making the fan (fans if I use smaller fans) look stylish instead of just sitting over the heatsink.

Neither my board or chip will go that high, half the MSI board was dead anyway, which is why I replaced it, but my CPU had a heart attack on temps if I went near 4.7GHz on the MSI because it'd just keep changing the VCore regardless of the setting or VDroop Offset setting, it was a good board but my ASRock one fits my colour scheme better than the MSI black & blue and gives me the opportunity to upgrade to the 7850K in the near future.

It's hot!

The sink is too small and the problem is worsened by the chokes which also run very hot and they are touching the sink. I alleviated the problem some by placing a high pressure 80mm fan over the whole area. There is overload throttling when pushing big voltages for high overclocks.

I'm sure that they used aftermarket cooling and maybe even LN2 on the VRMs and a custom BIOS that disabled throttling when they set the world record with this board a few months ago.

So a dedicated fan for the heatsink is advisable then? Are you able to overclock your 760k to a decent oc on that board?

Advisable would be to get a better heat sink or get a better board altogether.

For stable 24/7 I'm at 4500MHz CPU 2600MHZ CPU-NB DDR3-2400. I was able to keep the CPU at 4700MHz when the weather was colder. The problem when stabilizing higher is that it throttles back to 3600MHz under load due to overload. I can manipulate Turbo Core to validate and even run benches at 5GHz though.

if it's hot or really warm yeah put fan on the vrm heat sink it won't hurt any thing.

yeah MSI isn't necessarily advisable with them using cheap VRMs and causing fires.

I thought MSI used good quality components in their boards.

They do, but they also put the responsibility for equipment damage due to overclocking on the shoulders of the user. They won't protect themselves like other boards ( ASROCK , ASUS and GIGA) will, so if you want to set one up to blow, you most certainly can do so ( which the video sure looks like they did). Remember warranties stop when overclocking begins.

I've built over 100 systems in the last 10 years using MSI boards, and to date a grand total of 3 have had problems. One K7 finally had the capacitors start to leak , ( 8years old, replaced them and it runs like new) a K8N neo 4 that took some voltage through the NIC from a lightning strike ( killed the nic and the onboard sound but still runs today and so far is my best FSB clocking socket 939 board) and a GD-70 which the socket broke due to stress from supporting a heavy air cooler ( rma'd out of warranty period , new board in 10 days ,only paid shipping smile.gif ). I also have 20 of them running in industrial settings without climate control 24/7 , the environment is very dusty with temps running from sub freezing to over 100 F , there are also extremes in vibration and electromagnetic fields from large electric motors near the workstations. The oldest of these machines have ran 24/7 since being deployed ( except when the site is taken down for electrical work) and have over 30,000 hours of run time on them.
I have 8 Asrock boards in similar environments, but they have about half the run time on them ( 3 extreme 6 FM2's and 5 AM3+ boards) so far they have held up fine too.
I've bought 3 ASUS CHV-Z boards (one was doa, but it was an openbox from newegg), 2 foxconn's one died after 6 hours of use on stock voltages, 2 Zotac boards - no problems so far 1 EVGA Z68FTW which frustrated the beans out of me until I learned how to use it , now I really like it and lastly a couple of ECS boards that work fine , but I don't like very well.

I'd place spot fans on the areas that show excessive heat, it's amazing the difference they can make . I've seen a 20 C drop in temps from doing so.

Thread Starter
Up until now I've only used three MSI boards and one Gigabyte motherboard (did some rigs for a couple of friends) but I've always been fond of MSIs products, never had any complaints with them.
If I hadn't stumbled across the Extreme 6+ I would have gone with another MSI board, but even so I am very pleased with the Extreme 6+ even though they're quite a rarity in the UK (haven't seen any retailers sell them so I got mine from eBay).

Just a shame about the lax cooling for the VRMs, although the small heatsink looks great, I'll have to have a thought and a tinker with extra cooling without it looking like a mess. tongue.gif
