Minidump folder locked

Thread Starter
I just had a crash on my Desktop computer and planning to analyze the dumps but to my surprise the minidump folder is locked and the minidump files inside it cannot be copied to a different folder. I can go into the Security permissions of each file and add my administrator account there and fix the copy problem but my concern here is why was it suddenly locked?

I have other computers here in my environment and their minidump folder are not locked at all. So what causes it to be locked? We all have the same settings in our antivirus program.

Please help. Thanks.

Kevindd, the minidump folder should be a protected folder by default. I can't remember if in WinXP, the padlock icon displays on that minidump folder or not. I was about to say that you can take ownership of that folder without having to add privileges for your administrator account, but that's probably just a waste of time. What you need to do is set your system to take a full dump (excuse the pun.) And then use WinDebug to analyze it. The vast majority of time, the minidump in and of itself simply won't give you enough informaiton to go on. To set your PC to take a full dump, you can read my post here.

I just re-read your post. I see you're asking about the folder being locked out of access. I don't know why you can't access the contents -- it is definitely a security permission issue. If you're not experiencing the same problem on a different Win 7 machine, then it is because your folder security permissions are different.

No, I can access the folder it's just that I cannot copy the files without changing the permissions. And no, I already checked around 10 win7 x64 computers and all of them don't have locked icon in the folder.

What do you think?

Have you tried copying the minidump file(s) to another non-system protected folder? For instance C:\Temp

If that still gives you same trouble, launch the command shell with admin rights and then use robocopy to copy it. There is a GUI for robocopy but it's not so good. I'm going to assume you are comfortable using command lines.

After the command shell has been launched with admin rights, issue the following:
Code:
robocopy C:\Windows\Minidump X: *.dmp /b

Replace X with the actual letter of your flash drive. The b switch tells robocopy to start in backup mode. In this cas,e it is important to use so that it will overide the security permissions in the ACL.

BTW, the minidump folder is not what you should be concerned with. If you have made the changes to have your PC to take a full dump, that full dump file is going to be located on the root of Windows folder. i.e. C:\Windows.

Yes, copying it would yield an access is denied since the files themselves don't have correct permissions. They are not getting the permissions from their parent folder (C:\windows\minidump) but why is that?

Yes, I am comfortable in using the command line but don't want to go that route since I can copy the files that I need by just modifying the permissions of the file I want to copy.

What I don't understand is why were they setup that way in the first place when all my other computers aren't like that?

And yes, I know the difference of minidump, kernel memory dump, and complete memory dump but this is not the point here. Debugging is not my concern. My primary concern is why are the minidump files acting like that? That's all smile.gif

It is possible for the ACL to get corrupt. I've seen it happen in rare instances. That is why I asked you if you could copy the contents of the minidump folder to a non-system protected folder using the robocopy command line. I have no idea why you're seeing the padlock icon on some PCs but not others. Whatever security permissions you have on your PC are your own.

I am curious though why you are trying to access the contents of that folder if you're not interested in troubleshooting/diagnostics. The only reason why anyone would want to analyze the minidump files is for analyzing purposes!

Yes, I'm thinking maybe some of my programs locked that Minidump folder purposely? Is yours locked? I only see this on ONE computer and on the other computers I don't.

Well, yes technically I analyze minidump files quickly to check which driver caused it but my main concern here is that folder being locked. I know the difference between all the dumps, so yeah.

A new folder was created without a lock icon when I deleted the original one but after a few days it eventually had that lock icon again and I cannot copy the minidump files inside again. It seems that the files does not copy the permissions of their parent (Minidump) folder. Why is that?
