[Build Log] KBOX Kaveri LOTS OF PICS FAILURE

Original XBOX pc mod. I know, I know, its all been done before nothing new.

Why KBOX because it will feature the new A10-7850K Kaveri cpu and taking advantage of dual graphics.

CPU: 7850K about ready to order it

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WiFi- have it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128663

RAM: G. Skill Trident 2400 Cas 9 2x4gb - have it

GPU: XFX R7 250 low profile (this may change 250x coming out soon) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150682

PSU: Silverstone SFX12v 450 (this may change to SS 450w modular gold $30 more) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256063

My only forseeable problem is cooling.

I plan to cut out the top of the case above the cpu cooler either full circle size of fan cooler and put grill/mesh insert, or cut out design in same area maybe an X for fresh air for the cpu.

Finding a cooler that I can overclock with (within reason confined space cant expect too much), will fit m-itx board, and allow gpu to be installed is not that easy.

I may need to use my free Newegg Premier membership to try out a ton of coolers.

Noctua has NH-L12 but I saw a video where mitx board couldn't fit it with a gpu, so maybe a riser cable and that cooler.

CM GeminII M4, NH-L9a, all bad cooling reviews for OC's. Newegg has a bunch of other low profile coolers that either have no reviews online or are no name.

ANY ideas will help

Also going to cool the socket with a slim fan underneath

GPU is going to be facing out the side grill so no worries there.

Well the 7850K just came in Thank you bufu994 for passing on a sweet MC deal!
LL
LL

Heres a gutted Xbox the paper in there is the dimensions of the motherboard, I still am unsure of the layout I want to use, but I can fit the Silverstone 450w sfx12v psus in with the mobo. Got it from the flea market for $15 had to haggle down from $35 lol. The one I had around was thrown from a second story house it worked but didn't look as nice, it was my inspiration for this build.
LL

Gonna have to dremel off these plastic standoffs.

LL

Pulled the OEM switch was hoping to use the harness to the mobo but it seems to be wired in a way I am unsure of see next pic if you might know a little more than I.
Gonna put the eject as reset I suppose, there is also a red and green led soldered to it too.
http://www.overclock.net/g/i/1887964/kbox/sort/display_order/

Here the left most lines in the pcb come from the power switch and they route directly to one solder point. So I think I'm gonna have to solder the power switch from the back of the pcb.

LL

These old computer is going to donate its mobo tray to the cause, lol! I actually upgraded this machine to a 1400mhz duron and 9250 graphics.
http://www.overclock.net/g/i/1887970/kbox/sort/display_order/

Mobo should be here tomorrow.

Unfortunately I am going to slow down the build a bit because I want to benchmark some R7 cards and see a few things: Performance (mainly dual graphics, cost, overclocking headroom and whether or not I can fit it in this build.

Thanks Best Buy for giving Staples a good price to match!

I was going to put a 2.5" WD Black 320gb but now this and my Plextor M5 Pro 128 will be going in as hdds

Made some progress over the last week waiting for the RMA from Gigabyte using the board I was to send back as a template.

Cutting into the chassis with a dremel and get the rear cut outs done for the I/o.

LL

Got the new 250X in. Good gaming performance, no dual graphics though. just under 1300 so far in Firemarkextreme cpu @4.1 (undervolted OC) Nb @2000, ram @2133 max, 1150/1300 gpu no voltage increase, so theres more headroom there. But I have decided to go up to either a 260x or 265 for the final build something with a better cooler too.

LL

LL

I used 2.5" maching screws with 1.5" nylon spacers. Taped the ones that could be seen from outside with electrical tape.
Also can kinda see the rig in the back and yes it will be cooled with a CM 120V, had the H60 but the tubing would not let the top close so it went back.

LL

LL

THeres the motherboard in position. Directly underneath is where the GPU is going to be mounted using a riser cable or two one came in today and its DOA. I remember when they used to cost $5 now there $10 and up mostly $15+

LL

Not a good cut to the left side. The middle is stock or I would have cut it around the ports too. Not using the I/o shield because I would have to mod it so it would stick out past the top on the left because the top of the Xbox is higher than the edges.

LL

Other updates got a decent deal on a used Silverstone ST45SF-G Modular 450w Gold PSU so once that comes in I will have a better idea on how to fit in next to the rad of 120V. Then once I get that situated the GPU, then a few final touches like extra fans small ones, some usb ports in the original controller ports, possibly aluminum base for structural integrity, going to definitely raise the feet about 1/2 as the gpu and rad are pulling are up into from the bottom, and cutting out a few vent holes as needed.

Also sold SSD to increase budget a bit and either use my 3.5" as an external or get a 2.5" and mount internally, 1 128 ssd is also going to be internal.

NO! Why didn't I find this sooner? frown.gif I would have recommended a couple things: one, mSATA drives, especially the 840 EVO, are just as fast as an equivalent 2.5" drive, take up a fraction the space, and are roughly the same price (usually a bit more the the 840 EVO is close). You'd need an adapter unless your motherboard has a slot built in. So future people reading this, take note. Two, the 250X is Cape Verde and just a 7770 rebrand. It does not support XDMA and is unlikely to support hybrid crossfire. Same with the 265, except it's a 7850 rebrand. The best you can do is a 260X (Bonaire) as far as I know. Hawaii (290(X)) can be supported in theory but I'm not sure what exactly hybrid crossfire drivers support right now.

I think that you could turn the slats into effective vents, yes. I think you can even mount fans in push-pull, but an intake through the bottom/top and exhaust out the top/bottom would work pretty well.

Yes I think the slats turned into a vent is a good idea. I also am thinking of putting a pci slot cooler near the rear I/o and blowing out the side. I am just waiting for the rest of the parts to come in: PSU/GPU

Also yes I sold the Samsung to open up the budget a bit and just turned my 3.5" into an external.

Everything should be in within a week the psu is from NCIX Canada so it may take the longest and I need it to make sure I position the rad correctly.

Well after testing the 250X for a few weeks and seeing that the performance wasn't all that bad but the cooler wasn't all that great, and it was just a refresh card I sent it back.

So I found a Powercolor 260X open box but it had BSOD issues so that got sent back as well.

I did find that I can mount easily any GPU under 9" so I am close to being able to fit some 270's but its still a refresh card, so in hopes of dual graphics with the 260X that's what I'm aiming for.

I think I'm gonna remain brand loyal and get the Gigabyte R7 260X OC rev2 Gigabyte is letting me down with this board so far. They limited the iGPU overclock to 920 core, cannot get past 2000 NB, and ram wont go past 2133 no matter how loose the timings are, these issues are all bios lockdowns and imperfections. Just maybe they will release a more unlimited bios if I want a locked down bios I'll go buy a Dell.

Anyways I got some more parts in mainly for the cooling concerns.

The SSD bracket and fan will go under the PSU and pull air in from bottom. I tested the fan and it is super silent and pushes a decent amount of air good job Rosewill.
The PSU will actually rest on the end of the radiator and the SSD. They are the exact same height! What luck.

The other 3 40mm fans will be connected together and run off either molex or SATA, Sata preferably. They will mount in this old 5.25 in fan cooler. I'm gonna paint the housing black too.

ONCE the psu comes in I will start mounting more into the XBOX itself and just wait to do the GPU once it comes in and I can confirm it working.
