Even without a haswell-favored program (x264, emulators etc) there's a sizable IPC gap between sandy bridge (3930k) and Haswell. Enough to have a notable lead in many cases - especially the ones that happen to prefer architecture-specific stuff and fall on the haswell side as opposed to sb-e/lga2011

I don't have a ton of data like i said, few people bench sc2 these days and it's usually sites like this with their own benchmark conditions - if anyone wants to go grab some numbers, i'm up

Again, the minimum difference is small and it is single player- and I do believe a good deal of the "ipc" improvement of haswell is simply down to many Z87 motherboards running them at max turbo 24/7 on all cores, like 3.8-3.9Ghz stock- this behaviour was reported by various reviewers when haswell was out.

Uh, no, that's not how i or basically anybody educated measures IPC. Maybe some bad reviewers? Any number i would trust at all would either be with turbo completely disabled or at a static overclock. IPC gains sandy to haswell are reasonably big, like over 10% in many cases, over 15 in some like x264 (which benefits reasonably from avx2 support)

That performance graph above? Maybe. I couldn't even read the site - it's german. It's still a benefit though. Turbo's might have been higher - three or four core turbo is basically irrelevant though, given that sc2 under a heavy-stress situation.. I've seen split ~95% load, ~10% load, 0, 0 - though there's often like 30-40% load on second thread, there's basically nothing to gain at all from having > 2 cores or HT

What I am saying is that some of those 10-15% reported gains (especially gaming) were measured using 3770k@3.7Ghz vs 4770k@3.9Ghz since often reviewers just plug and play. It actually is kind of valid, since most people (that aren't tech savvy) will do that anyway. Because otherwise, from sandy to ivy to haswell, jumps aren't all that impressive (at least when using a single GPU,with 2 or more I'd expect newer to be quite better).

AVX2 workloads I agree-it is haswell's baby,it is not even close with previous generations.

Went over all of those, only one good result i think biggrin.gif (basically all of them are not CPU bound, the skyrim one is weird and not done in cpu intensive place as >200fps, also ivy bridge >>haswell/sandy for some reason)

Intel Core i5-3570K 4.5G 82.4 118.73 %
Intel Core i5-2500K 4.5G 78.4 112.97 %

^That shows ~13% IPC gain (88.6/78.4 = 1.130)

I was actually thinking of opening bench thread on teamliquid for sc2, could throw in updated version of x264 encoder for benching (many people use it for streaming; it's one of the bigger concerns when buying a CPU amongst gamers, aside from certain games running well) and get some updated replays to run through and report scores

I was ,too, looking at skyrim and was wondering, but then again it has a pretty finicky engine and perhaps love for old instruction extensions- intel might have modified some legacy stuff with haswell that reflect there. Regardless, I still feel a 4770k is a good uprade over a 2500k especially with SLi/CFX - both the new mobo features , stronger core and more threads are useful. Over a 3570k/Z77 combo not so much, I'd probably just drop a 3770k in there need be.

Actually, if you want to run your 4770k at 4.4 ghz and run one of the games I benched a while back with physx (choose to have it disabled on your gpu so the cpu does all the work). I ran both Mafia 2 and Batman AC benchmarks with physx enabled on the cpu in my sig link of the comparison between 8150 and 2500k so you can run the same settings and compare the results. It won't be an apples to apples since the i7 has always had more cache than the i5 but maybe we can get a better idea of just how big an improvement Haswell is over Sandy in those situations.

Don't have either of those games atm, i was originally super interested in cpu's and performance for sc2 (because best oc'd cpu's on release got uncomfortable performance.. single digit in very high supply large team games)

Maybe worth a shot some time, but the only game i really play ATM is planetside 2 (aside from benching etc with sc2), which is hard to bench (you need two people to run side-by-side really and it's hard to be accurate to within a few % i guess)

There is a bench in the Mafia 2 demo which should still be free on Steam if you have that.
