For posterity.... just generic sounding enough on the wording, but just not generic sounding enough to be a hint... considering the strong possibility of a 28nm high-end Maxwell hitting soon and hints from places like Forbes' tech editor stating they could potentially come as early as late March, I'm gonna go with "hint".

hmm a 28nm high end Maxwell is a possibility. Totally forgot about that. How much of an improvement over the 780 Ti would you estimate a 28nm Maxwell high end card to be?

After seeing how power-efficient and fast Maxwell as GM107 is (1350+mhz stock clocks on some models and people reaching overclocks of 1450+mhz) in what turns out to be a 40w envelope (proof: http://cryptomining-blog.com/1014-how-to-increase-the-geforce-gtx-750-ti-power-target-limit/), I'm pretty bullish as to the prospects of how good Maxwell will be even if it comes out on 28nm at this point.

Here's a thread I made prior to the reviews hitting and users getting cards (including myself):

www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1040632984

I have a lengthy explanation and speculation of what I think might happen there. To update it as to what I'd guess on 28nm, I'd say 25 or 30 SMM's on a Big Maxwell @ 28nm, with a 384-bit bus minimum and 512-bit wouldn't shock me, (Maxwell is better-optimized on the bandwidth efficiency front, by a significant amount, but that many would need a lot of bandwidth anyway to feed them). Clocks I expect to see "superclock" or "oc" models come out of the box at 1250mhz at this point, handily.

Ultimately, that would leave the specs, potentially up to this level (of course speculation, though 28nm is very mature now)

Much likelier scenario: 1250mhz+ core (1100mhz non-OC models), 3200 shaders (25 SMM or 5 GPC), 200 TMU, 384-bit bus width w/ 4gb 7.0ghz GDDR5, 48 ROP
BEST case scenario (very unlikely but it is a technical possibility): 1250mhz+ core (1100mhz non-OC models), 3840 shaders (30 SMM or 6 GPC) with 240 TMU, 512-bit bus width w/ 4gb 6.5-7.0ghz GDDR5, 64 ROP.

Remember though this isn't even what I'd call an educated guess, but rather educated speculation. We'll see soon.

8xx is 28nm, with 9xx being the 20nm refresh... Falls in line with months old speculation.

Seems to be the likeliest case by far, to me.

Don't think that is happening. I think it would be unlikely for Nvidia to release a large-die 28nm Maxwell GTX 880 as I believe they'll want to start the 8xx-series with a smaller die GPU like they did with Kepler. If they tried to release a 28nm small die Maxwell chip I doubt it would be much faster than the GK110 in the 780Ti which wouldn't make sense. My guess is that they may release some budget 28nm Maxwell SKUs but I just don't think we'll see any high end Maxwell parts on 28nm. I think we'll see the GTX 880 released as a 20nm small-die chip late this year with the second 20nm Maxwell generation releasing as the large-die GK110 replacement in 2015. Of course this is just my hunch, could be totally wrong.

I agree with you, if Maxwell was not going to be 20 nm I see no reason for the delays. 28 nm IMO has been pushed to the limits with 780 Ti and Titan Black. That said I'm looking forward to Maxwell, I think there will be pretty awesome gains.

Yeah, I would be disappointed if it wasn't 20nm at this point.
