Get Windows back?

Thread Starter
A while back ago I bought a Dell PC for day to day things and it came pre loaded with Windows 8

I got in to gaming and decided to get some upgrades for it...

When booting up everything went perfect... Drivers installed, games were running perfect.

There was one issue though... My windows has restored to trial version of windows

How do I get it back to the full version? Dell didnt email me with a code for Windows so I cant re-enter it

Usually, there is a label on a PC with the product key on it. Sometimes though, it just needs to validate the product key that it already has. You might be able to activate it without reentering the product key. Just go into System Properties, and click "Activate now". If neither of these work, I'm out of ideas.

In that case the license is not valid, it usually assumes the motherboard to be "the PC" it applies to. It would be illegal to get windows activated using the same key even if it did work, basically you need to buy a new copy of Windows.

Yeah your OEM copy of windows is tied to the motherboard, so you will need to buy a new copy of windows if you wish to stay legal.

I don't think so, I think you might even need to have Windows 7 installed and activated before you can do an upgrade to make use of an upgrade key.

If you have a licenced version of another OS such as windows 7 or possibly even windows vista to install first and "upgrade" from. My Windows 8 pro student offer i got will activate on its own without calling or anything but i think the legal legit way you have to upgrade from a activated version of windows 7 (which i do own a student copy of windows 7 pro as well)

It's not just the motherboard. Microsoft considers the PC to be substantially different if there has been 3 or more hardware changes made to the system.

^ Disregard my statement here -. this is longer true as it was back in the XP days.

You need to buy a full version license of Windows. There is no getting around it.
