New rig for 2014

Thread Starter
Been lurking this site for years (decades?) and I feel I've finally built a rig worth making a post about. I just upgraded from a core 2 duo, 4 gb ram, first gen raptor C drive, GTX 260. I've been building rigs for about 10 years now, but it's been a long time since I built one for myself.

New rig:

Case: Rosewill Thor V2 - White
Power: Corsair AX860i
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-G1.SNIPER 5
CPU: 4770K CPU
Cooling: H100i
RAM: Kingston HyperX Beast 4 x 4 GB
SSD: Kingston HyperX 3K 120 GB x 2 - RAID 0
GPU: R9290X-DC2OC
Storage: Caviar Black from old rig

I decided I was going to go all out if I was building a new rig. I was hesitant to order the parts until a friend of mine showed me the one day deal on Amazon for the majority of the parts you see listed. I got a screaming deal on this rig other than video card. I paid a premium for that ($699) but it sounds like I got lucky because the prices just jumped up $200 while I was waiting for my parts to get here. Either way, it'll pay itself off over time doing some mining (which I'm still tuning my cg miner config for this rig, if you have any suggestions please let me know, but I'm not overclocking this thing yet)

This is literally my dream rig. All the best stuff you can buy. Insanely fast, and good at everything.

I went ahead and documented the entire build process down to some pretty minute details. Maybe it will help future rig builders, either way, it was a lot of fun.

I knew this thing was ridiculously fast when I went to do the auto resizing of all the images.

Case how it arrived:

Rotating this fan so the cable goes straight to the opening:

Brining cables through this opening:

"cleaned up" case:

Mobo mounts installed. Turns out I didn't need the 4th column of mounts. I guess Gigabyte has a different definition of EATX than Rosewill. Oh well:

Popped out the cover to install the DVD-RW:

DVD-RW installed:

Removed the top fan so the H100i can be installed:

H100i back plate installed:

I/O Shield installed. This is actually a badass shield. The back side is padded by a soft foam:

Mobo installed:

Radiator installed (you have to look close)

Fans and radiator installed:

HDD mounts were ready to go for a 2.5" drive. Installing on carpet because I live dangerously like that.

SSD's in their new home:

Cable management begins:

(sorry for the rotate fail) Pulling front panel plugs through:

This was an incredible PITA. 90 degree SATA connectors straight through the opening right there.

The spider web begins:

Front panel stuff getting all hooked up. This ended up changing for the final form of the rig to get the Corsair H100i and power supply data lines hooked up to the USB 2.0 spots.

GPU installed:

The mayhem in my living room at this point:

CPU installed:

Cooler installed. Notice how the fan wires attached to the cooling block are behind the mounting bracket in this picture..... ......... yeah....... That was fixed...... *facepalm*

I was expecting a bottle of Crown in here:

PSU installed:

PSU wired up to everything. Full modular PSU's for the win:

Terrible:

The insanity grows:

Memory installed:

Zip tied some un-used wires (top-left)

Final form?!

The last chaos pic:

Old and new:

Wiring up my storage drive after I got Windows installed with just the SSD's in RAID0:

The best I'm going to do with cable management in the back at this point. This includes the Corsair data lines:

Final form running:
