Obviously it's completely misguided to get mad at TB or those that still enjoy the games, but I can understand where the anger comes from.

Have you actually played the game yet? I do respect your opinion but you seem to have pretty strong opinion on the game. If its based on purely watching videos and reading reviews, i'd suggest to try it yourself. You might get surprised! I was, and after the linear prologue you actually get your freedom to explore and unlock more of the city as the story progresses. Every mission so far has had multiple entry points, sideways, side streets etc. so you have plenty of choice, even during missions. Ofc you are free to explore the city between missions. Levels usually contains multiple secrets and level design gets pretty good after prologue. Some of the secrets and paths are actually pretty clever, IF you are not using that focus thing. That needs to be set OFF, with HUD, waypoint markers and lock-pick helpers. At stock thief is definitely not the way its meant to be played, YOU need a custom difficulty. Its a serious mistake to play on default settings biggrin.gif

I have not played it and very likely never will. I do have a strong opinion of Thief, but I haven't posted much about it since it's been released, as I have no reason to argue with those enjoying it. The post you quoted of me was just in reference to the TB video, which was more about fan reactions in general.

Its you call, but i dont get your attitude. Im a fan of witcher for example, if W3 gets really really bad reviews i would still buy it and give it a fair chance. Not to mention that thief received pretty neutral welcome by reviewers. Majority of players do seem to like it, including lots of old fans.

Btw i gave splinter cell conviction a fair shot too and was dissapointed. After that blacklist too, and was rewarded with one of my favourite games in 2013! If i had you attitude, i would have skipped both.

I didn't judge Thief on reviews, I judged it on it's design. To me, it represents a lot of what I despise about the current state of the industry. So it is nothing more than coincidence that it got bad reviews.

I am playing the game now, and enjoying it. I definitely feel it was worth my $34 discounted pre-order price. The story seems solid so far, and the graphics are good enough for me.

That said - It's not the game I was hoping for. Here are my minor criticisms:

I was hoping for something a little more 'Open World'. The fact that the world is broken up into sections that are about the size of a city block between Load Screens is pretty disappointing. I would have been happier with it being functionally like Skyrim- a large open world map and only requiring loading when entering smaller detailed environments like houses or businesses.

There is far more movement 'path' restrictions than there should be. Sure there are multiple paths you can take, but it shouldnt feel like you are on a path at all. Here's my example. You have 'rope' arrows that allow you to shoot them and then climb vertically, but there are very few places you can actually use them. There are simply not enough designated 'anchor' points. So most of the time when you want to climb, you have to find the one or two spots where the game designates that you can ascend. That really kills any feeling of freedom.

I'm loving this game so far. I can't say I have a single complaint. I especially love the atmosphere and art style.

The game follows Deadly Shadows a bit too much in the bad ways, especially the constant area loads and partly linear level design. There's also some problems with the contextual climbing, and some people on pc seem to have trouble grasping there's a separate climb down button. Imo the mechanics work much better on a controller. That's also where the contextual climbing is a better choice, like jumping from one rafter to another. The jumping in previous Thiefs could be extremely clunky and not really masterful at all. That said they could still enable freeform jumping in addition to the contextual stuff. It would certainly make sense to jump over the traps. The game also has plenty of bugs and other minor issues, but ultimately in my opinion the game is pretty much on par with Deadly Shadows. It's bigger and fancier, but lacks character and has quite a few issues that could've been avoided easily enough. Hopefully the bad reviews won't be the death of the franchise. I feel a lot of the gripes people have against this game are things that were the exact same in Thief 1&2, and they would've hated those games too.
