Looking for a laptop for school, and video capture & editing.

Thread Starter
What is your maximum budget?
- $1300 (USD) Super low, I know, but feel free to also suggest laptops not too far above the price limit.

What country are you in?
- India and Oman.

What will be the uses of this laptop?
- Taking notes at school
- Compiling C++ and CUDA programs
- Video capturing game engine projects (Unreal Engine, Creation Engine etc.)
- Video editing the above
- Image editing
- Gaming
- Entertainment (FLAC quality music. Bluray quality anime, shows and movies)

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
- Intel and nVidia, please.

What screen size do you require?
- Bigger the better. 17" is max, afaik.

What screen resolution do you require?
- FHD. 1920x1080.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
- New.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
- Is 6 hours too much to ask?

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
- I'm used to maxing out AAA games on my desktop, which I unfortunately do not have anymore, but I'm willing to put up with medium settings.
- I need to be able to run minecraft with at least 16-32x forced AA. The jagged edges without AA make the game unplayable for me.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
- None. I plan to dualboot Windows and Linux.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
- Aluminum would be sweet. I just don't want it to look boring, with corners and keys designed like someone who is extremely unhappy with his job.

How much hard drive space do you need?
- 1TB, at least.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
- Webcam.
- More than 8GB RAM.
- DO NOT need an optical drive. They're as obsolete as Floppy drives.
- A decent soundcard. I had a Titanium HD in my desktop paired with a set of Beyerdynamic DT990's. Oh god, it was audio heaven.
- An SSD for my OS would be nice, but not mandatory. I'm not sure how good Hybrid drives are, but if they're better than 7200RPM drives, then I would like one.
- Backlit keyboard would be badass, but not mandatory.
- Non-glossy screen. Hate those glares.

Is there anything else we need to know?
- In order for me to be able to buy this laptop, I need to pitch it to my dad primarily as a video capturing and editing beast, in addition to being able to use it at school. I'd like some tips/help with this, please. He absolutely doesn't approve of gaming kookoo.gif

I've personally had good experience with my Lenovo Thinkpad w510 I bought for school in 2010.

Honestly, I'm not sure there's a laptop that meets all your criteria AND fits your budget. (Especially if you are buying a brand new laptop.)

More than 8 GB RAM? That means you want 12 GB or 16 GB RAM, right? Laptop manufacturers charge a high price premium for extra RAM because only power users, working professionals and enthusiasts need this much RAM.

Decent sound card? Most laptops only have integrated 'Intel Azalia HD audio' aka Realtek HD Audio or something similar. I don't know any laptop off the top of my head with an actual discrete soundcard with a DAC, if that is what you mean.

Also, non-glare screens are rather rare when it comes to laptops (and usually only found in business or mobile workstation models). This means an extra price premium.

Finally, you want an Intel and NVIDIA processor. Mobile quad-core (for rendering and editing) plus decent discrete GPU = another price premium.

best advice, get a normal "meh" laptop for taking to class. then build a beastly desktop.
Laptops arent good for the majority of the things you're listing, their heatsinks are microscopic.
once the heatsink gets a light film of dust on it, game over, time to rip the entire top and bottom of the laptop apart and blow it out. let me tell you from experience, this is such an annoying task.
being that it will be your daily computer, you'll be doing this a lot

if you want a capture card for desktop, avermedia c985, doesn't get better than that. i've actually used that to stream to twitch with.

Woops. I didn't notice the time stamp. This information will be kept for posterity in case someone randomly stumbles across this thread while searching for mobile workstations at an outrageously low price.

Yeah, my bad. I was trying to clear out some of the backlog of unsanswered threads.

But for the sake of argument, I don't agree with you. The base model w540 from Lenovo (link that might or might not work) comes with an anti-glare screen and similar specs to what he's asking for a similar budget... And any 12 year old with a screwdriver can upgrade ram. They also make an adapter for the w-series to replace the optical drive with a 2.5" drive

Good find, but after purchasing an 8GB RAM stick, additional HDD and hard drive caddy he would be way over budget.
