If you compare them to monitors about 100-150 maybe, but over 200 they have no chance.

Right, but he said he's not going to pay for rokkits or m-audio BX5s. Cheapest I see BX5s is $240 for a pair.

I think the OP is completely missing the point of studio monitors. Case in point, they mentioned there's no treble/bass adjustment on one of the models. Guess what, studio monitors are designed to be 100% completely FLAT in response. Of course there are no treble/bass adjustments - those are on your MIXING BOARD or DAW software.

As in no peaks, no valleys, and the better/higher end the monitor is, usually the flatter the response. If you want a good "listening" speaker set, then get a 2.1 general purpose multimedia speaker. Suggestions have already been made.

Studio monitors are for producing audio content that will be listened by a wide spectrum of end users. You don't want the speakers to "color" the music any more than necessary, so you can get the best average response for the largest average group of people.

if the op is willing to go to about $150~ ish it looks like..

this is my suggestion

t-amp + bookshelf speakers .. this can be done for as little as $20~is for the t-amp (lepai 2020A+ )

http://www.amazon.com/LP-2020A-Lepai-Tripath-Class-T-Amplifier/dp/B0049P6OTI/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1392667611&sr=1-1&keywords=lepai

personally I would probably get something a bit nicer..but

maybe like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Topping-TP20-MK2-TA2020-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B00828UTE4/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1392667659&sr=1-4&keywords=t-amp

(my own t-amp is a SMSL SA-S3 which has been excellent came with quality liteon 4A psu (ul listed) for $60~ shipped off ebay, i would have no problem suggesting that also).

Then for speakers personally I'd shop for used / vintage I have some very nice speakers I have gotten for very cheap.

JBL L1's $40/pr
Montior Audio Silver S1 $11.25 (yes $11~ some cabinet issues (badly painted....fixed them myself look pretty decent now and sound amazing)
NHT SuperZero's $50/pr
B&W DM302 $20/pr

various sets of Minimus 7/77 ..similar optimus speakers between $10 to $15 / pr

but if no such luck exists in the op's area and / or they don't want to mess with used gear

various options should stay in budget

THIS RIGHT HERE is actually probably the winnar right now $50~ Pioneer SP-BS21-LR look up reviews for these pioneers they are really good for the money.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882117405

a couple other options:

http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1392667933&sr=8-7&keywords=bookshelf+speakers

The Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers are without question the best value in the speaker world right now, IME/IMO. I have dozens of sets of speakers ranging from "free" to well into 4-figures per pair, and the Pioneer FS51's @ $100-150/pair easily compete with, and sometimes beat, speakers 8-10x their price. They sound better than the over-hyped mass-market Klipsch/Polk speakers by a wide margin, again for 1/3-1/5 the price.

You seriously cannot go wrong with any of the speakers from that line (I have FS51's, FS52's, BS41's, a center, and two subs). The drivers used are what you'd typically see in the more expensive speakers, but it's the crossover design that takes the cake, designed from the ground up by Andrew Jones and being the focus of the vast majority of the R&D funds/time, it is simply unparalleled for speakers anywhere near this price point.

I have yet to have anyone I've recommended these to NOT be immediately impressed, most of whom were upgrading from "high end"*cough* Klipsch and Polk setups (RM2's/Monitor70's/etc).

Just want to add that the Pioneer SP-BS21-LR mentioned in both posts above are an absolute STEAL at $50 on sale right now. I'd suggest buying them before they go out of stock.

I agree with the Andrew Jones plus t amp. If you want a sub later on add one. Dayton sub1200 isn't too much or a Polk psw505.

I own the pioneer 4" Andrew Jones speakers with a lepai ta2020. Honestly it's my favorite setup I've ever owned without a sub.

old thread now i know but thought i'd throw in my experiences since it concluded.

I bought the pioneer 5.1 setup with bookshelf speakers and also bought an extra SW-8MK2 for the full 5.2 setup.

I went cheap and got the new sony 5.2 channel STR-DH550

Hooked up through HDMI from my GTX780 the audio is amazing. The clarity rivals that of my tannoy 601A pair being converted with a profire2626 interface. However the listening experience is far better given that the tannoy speakers are designed to show the true nature of the sound and these pioneer's are designed to deliver a good quality experience.

One other nugget of info. If you but the extra sub at the same time as the speaker combo you get the sub for 90 ish dollars because the combo discount effects everything in your cart.
