There's not really that much to HTML5 for most people. I would say most people are far better off learning XHTML 1 or HTML4.01 and CSS2. Once you understand these, then move on to CSS3 and learn about all the transforms, animations, columns, etc that you love but still can't use due to backward compatibility. Next learn Javascript. Once all of this is done, you may finally start learning about HTML5.

HTML5 features are mostly JS anyway:

DRM
media tags
geolocation (JS)
drag-and-drop (JS)
canvas (JS)
history (JS)
web storage/caching (JS)

I'd recommend MDN (Mozilla Development Network)
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/

Here's the portal for HTML in particular
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML

YES! After reading his example i was wondering why that was HTML5. I fully agree with learning the basics of HTML, then basics of CSS, then advance CSS, then Javascript, then HTML5. The only thing in HTML5 that i think beginners can appreciate is the media tags. "video" is a very simple easy way to add a video to your page. But, for the most part you can copy paste generic "object" tags to do the same thing.

In general with HTML, CSS is king. It makes things look amazing and much easier to adjust. Understanding the developer tools for your browser will help you out a lot. Definitely watch a youtube video or 2 about your browsers developer tools . https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/
