Looking to convert to Nvidia from AMD

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I have been rolling with AMD for the past year now since I built my rig. I went from a Sapphire 7970 Vapor-X to a R9 290X. While I really like the R9 290X, I can't help but be a little annoyed with how things have been for the past month or so. I wanted some opinions on whether you guys think I should sell the card and get a 780Ti, or if I should wait the year out until the Maxwell cards come out. I was hoping to get some objectivity from you guys, especially on why I should switch to Nvidia. This is coming from a person who doesn't really know much about team green. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

My build:

Windows 7 Ultimate

Samsung 128GB SSD (boot drive)

Seagate Barracuda 2TB HD

Asrock Z77 Xtreme 6

i7 3770K OC'd to 4.5 ghz

Corsair i80 cpu cooler

Sapphire AMD R9 290X OC'd to 1075/1325 with a Gelid Rev.2 Icy vision cooler installed

G.Skill Ripjaws-X 16GB 2133

Corsair ATX gold 750 PSU

Thermaltake Armor Revo Gene midtower case

Well, now's a good time to switch. 290X prices are as high as they'll ever be, and Nvidia doesn't like to drop prices on their big-die GPUs.

But unless you record/stream alot, I see no advantage with AMD or Nvidia right now. Prices are just terrible on both sides, and vendor specific features aren't very useful on either side (unless you want ShadowPlay, which is alot better at recording than RadeonPro).

Pretty much this. I don't know how much you bought your 290X for but if you got it at a decent price or even better yet before the mining craze and the sky high price hikes than selling it you'll make a nice chunk of change.

Why making a decision with past`s experiences?that makes.no sense.keep it untill 2015/2016(if you are ok with power consimption and temperature)

I don't record or stream at all. I do agree with what you said about the prices though, they are insane. I've just been under the impression that Nvidia just offers a smoother experience, which is why I was asking.

I actually bought mine the minute they came out on Newegg, after spamming F5 for an hour straight lol. I paid 599 for it. I was thinking about selling it due to the mining craze like you mentioned, but obviously only if I would end up getting a smoother, more streamlined experience with Nvidia.

I don't mind the power consumption at all. In terms of temperature, I hit 63-64 C on 100% load due to my cooler, so I'm not worried about that. The thing is, the card does not overclock very well. And their last 2 drivers, especially this new beta, has been giving me fits. I just feel like it's not as smooth as it should be. My benchmarks are great, but I just feel like I can get better stability.

The new beta drivers are giving me some issues, such as random crashes and whatnot. The card does not overclock very well, even though I'm hitting 63-64C on 100% load with my cooler. I feel as if every driver that comes out, especially this new beta, I have to reinstall more than once. I swear I have installed this beta about 6 times already.

Overclocking a 290x is tough. You need a lot of experience. And a lot of volts. The new betas are not that good go back to the previous one. Just use DDU and then install nothing else. AMD offers the same smooth experience as nvidia. Now if you feel stutter ( no microstutter) then its a combination of cpu, ram, hdd,os and drivers.
