Why won't my computer power off after I shut down?

I recently reinstalled windows (7) to fix a couple things (random lock ups was the main one) and just generally clean up my hard drive. As soon as windows reinstalled (before I installed anything including updates) I noticed that it would not power off when I told it to shut down. Windows shuts down and there is no signal to the monitor but there is still power going to the computer (lights, fans running). Another thing is that if the computer restarted it would load up the BIOS splash screen (is that what it's called?) but rather than loading windows next the screen would just turn black, no boot (I had to press the reset switch on the comp to get it going).

After I installed all the drivers and windows updates the computer seems to be restarting OK, but it is still not powering off if I shut down (unless I hold the power button). I haven't made any hardware changes at all and I'm using the same OS as before (windows 7 home premium). Surely this is a software and not a hardware issue, why would it not be shutting down all of a sudden after a simple windows reinstall?

EDIT: Fixed: I reset my bios settings and the computer works fine now smile.gif

Try checking your power options in the control panel and see what way it's set.
By default it SHOULD just shut down, but you never know.

Edit: Check your ACPI settings in BIOS too. Something MIGHT have changed
after doing a clean install.

What exactly do I check? I'm in advanced power options (it's selected on balance) but I can't seem to find anything got to do with shutting down.

EDIT: Fixed, all I did was restore default bios settings and now it shuts down like normal. Strange because I didn't think I changed anything in the bios in the first place.

Have a look at THIS

Go into "Choose what the power buttons do" and select shut down.
(If not already selected) That might fix it.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if it happens again. As I said above tho I fixed it by resetting default bios settings.
