two 290x's pulling 600w each? no way!

Heya's....
I got myself a power meter today that was assured would be accurate to .2 watts and placed it behind my setup. Without my miner on I am getting 300w. With it on I'm getting over 1500w! One card is standard with the other overclocked slightly to 1050/1500.

Is it safe to assume the meter is wrong? Is there something I'm doing to pull wayyyy more then I should be?

Must be a faulty meter, no way that they can pull that much...

Which power meter did you get?
Make sure the PSU is plug directly to meter than to the wall, with nothing else on the same plug.
Either meter is not set correctly or faulty. I'm leaning not set correctly.

Directly to the cord leading to the power supply. Nothing else is connected from any of the sockets coming from the wall. Look its not an expensive power meter, $20 from jaycar here in Sydney. Powertech is the brand name.

So I'm assuming that not under load a 8350, 2 290x's, 3x200mm fans and a few 140mm fans may equal 300w? Or Does this sound unreasonable as well?

I'm also getting a power factor of 94. Not quite sure what that sucker means.

I do not know your brand AUS has different voltage. Sometimes some cheap meter can not handle loads very well and read out is confusing.
Kill-A-Watt meter to test. My UPS has a screen which shows the power used. Both were within 5-10w from each other.
290x is 300w TDP
8350 is 125w TDP
Extras say 50w (a little more than actual)

675w only when everything is maxed out at the same time 100% full load. That number goes up when you OC. Which can reach 750-800w.
Under normal, you will see around 400-500w.

That is a lot of power there used from those numbers. What power supply are you using?

1) Please use the edit function instead of multi posting. thumb.gif It's the little pencil looking icon under your post. It's much preferred to avoid double posting, unless its to bump after 24 hours.

2) Your rig at idle should be drawing nowhere NEAR 300w, and definitely nowhere near 1500w at load. What PSU are you using? 1500w at load, just simply ASSUMING 80% efficient, that'd be 1200w that you're pulling from your PSU. Is your PSU 1200w or more? If no, then its obvious you're not drawing 1200w from it.

But seriously, those readings are WAAAAY off.

Assuming your using a corsair 1200i to get those readings?

PSU here is a thermaltake 1475w which should be rated as gold if not higher on some tests.

I here you. I've underclocked the 8350 and its really doing nothing but keeping the OS running. I'm assuming TDP of the 290x is the MAX at stock which at least one of the cards is running.

Question: Is there a way I can test this power meter in a more robust way to know for sure before returning tomorrow?

The PSU you using is well above what you need. You are not even at 10-15% idle.
Try a different PSU that will be close. Like a 900-1000w max, to be used for testing.

Thermaltake 1475w is like having 2 PSU in one. Also make sure the power cable that came with that PSU is not 18 Gauge, it is garbage and needs replacement. You want to use 14 gauge.
You want to make sure that both 290x is being plugged in the 12v2 (red) section and rest of system in 12v1 (Black)
The hard wired cables are part of the 12v1 (Black)

I was just doing simple math. You said you're pulling 1500w from the wall. So without knowing what your PSU really is, I just assumed it was 80% efficient under load, which would put that 1500w from the wall to 1200w at the PSU (1500 x 0.80 = 1200).

Actual numbers.....

You're "pulling" 1542.4w from the wall "supposedly". (241v x 6.4a = 1542.4w)
Your PSU is 80+ Gold, so we'll take the 87% efficient number (worst case according to 80+ Gold standards).
So you're pulling 1542.4w, and your PSU is 87% efficient. That puts you to 1341.88w being pulled from your PSU. (1542.4 x 0.87).

So according to your ACTUAL numbers, you're supposedly pulling 1341w from the PSU, with your equipment.

There's absolutely no way two 290's at stock 300w TDP and an underclocked 8 core will pull 1300w. It's impossible.

Your PSU should be nearly enough for four 290's in quad fire. You're absolutely not anywhere near the limits of it with just 2.
