hello and welcome smile.gif

Ubuntu is a version of debian linux. Basically they take a snapshot of debian unstable, fix it, and release it. Kinda handy really. It;s quite popular.

Ubuntu is a full Linux operating system. You would run it instead of windows. It can be run directly off a DVD so you can just toss the disk in the machine and restart to get a whole different operating system. It's main advantages are that it's free (as in beer), it will run on very old hardware that windows may be too slow on, and it's systems are completely different from windows, so if you have a problem with your windows setup you can just bypass all of it and use it to fix your machine's problems.

If its running from the DVD does it mean its immune to viruses? Like restart your computer and everything clean?

usually. Linux in general is pretty darn hard to virus to begin with. It's got multi layered permissions. it can be infected with worms, which is a different subset of malware.

If you've got a DVD that is on the fly rewritable there might be a problem, but if it;s the kind you have to burn you should be safe. This is asuming of course that the DVD is the only permanant storage attached to the machine. A pece of malware might for example writ to your C drive, and if there is one in there and writable, you could wind up with an infected drive.
