ASRock motherboard also have the feature to disable one core per module. Scores of 2M/4C vs 4M/4C in Cinebench 11.5 is a massive jump from 3.38 to 4.18

EDIT: I tested Metro 2033 4M8T vs 4M4T and here's the result. It's better to use all cores IMO (omit the minimum framerate because that happens when the benchmark loads up)

Though's are the results i was expecting by disabling 4 cores and not overclocking benching 4M/4T @ 4ghz against 4M/8T @ 4ghz. But what i want to do is overclock the 4M/4T to 5+Ghz and see if there is a performance gain over 4M/8T @ 4.5ghz.

If you going to be doing tests.

Compare a 4M8T @ 4ghz vs 4M4T @ 4.5ghz.

The performance should be close to being proportional as if you were running 4M/8T @ 4.5ghz vs 4M/4T to 5+Ghz.

Makes sense. Because overclockability of 4M4T is higher than 4M8T. Those are tested at 4.5GHz. I will test again

I remember trying this a while back on bf3 on my 8320 i seemed it played worse, tried both disabling one core per module and just disabling core 5 and 7 if I remember correctly, didnt really help me achieve higher overclocks but it did help me lower my heat at the time since i was using only one rad. cant even remember if this was when I first got my second 7970 ,

I wish AMD would fix the FPU problem and give us another 8-core, even if on a new socket. (8x1,15=9,2)
But that's probably a pipedream - which reminds me: did Kaveri really fix the FPU problem?)
The fact is FPU isn't really a problem and almost completely less so with Kaveri. HSA will move most FPU to iGPU so no need to waste the CPU die space for less than effiecient work. In general use the FPU wont likely affect much of your daily use.

Bf3 can use 6 threads not just 4 so you would be correct you get worse performance when using one core per module. But like you said disabling one core per module lowers heat which increase overclockability compared to 4M/8T. My theory is when overclocked because of the lower heat and non shared L2 cache you should get better per core performance then just overclocking all 8 cores in programs using a max of 4 threads which is the majority. But for the select few programs that use more then 4 threads you will get worse performance.

if you leave all cores active in bios and then run cinebench custom with 4 threads I'm pretty sure you will get near the same score as going 1c/1m... I did.

Also you will gain little to no oc headroom by disabling cores.. also from my own experience.

Final test. Weird how it get higher maximum framerate at 4GHz. Average framerate is less than 1fps anyway so it's irrelevant, at least in Metro 2033
