What's wrong with my computer?

Not sure where to post this so it's here.

I gave a friend of mine a computer a dell optiplex g620 probably some computer that was used in a computer lab at some point. It currently at 2gb ram a 3.0ghz pentium? Dual core. And on board chip. We have a gpu on the way for it.

The problem is everything is really really slow. Opening a program will take several seconds. We've tried adding more ram twice but both times they sent us bad chips. I was guessing it was a tired old hard drive, so we put his SSD from his main computer with windows on it in the tower, got a looping boot from the windows loading screen. When I had this computer apart I know the gpu chip was not cooled and was ridiculously hot, but I put a massive high CFM fan in it to cool the whole thing. We have not tested it with a dedicated gpu yet.

Memory diagnostic said memory is okay. What could be wrong? I'm wondering if mobo is bad now.. I have a spare one with a bad sata controller where would could just purchase a pci satacontroller for.

I'm not sure if your serious......

But! Add more memory.

What's the OS? Most Windows OS nowadays operates so much better with RAM greater than 2Gb.
Pentium (Even DualCore) isn't a beast, so few seconds of waiting is just normal.
If you ran too hot, your PC would just turn off to prevent damage (or burst into flames, if you prefer biggrin.gif )

Lol like that cooler on it it has a big one similar to the hyper212 but smaller and no copper piping and dang that thing was hot when my hyper doesn't even feel warm. Well it's only using 800mb actively. I know 4gb was the requirement for a 64 bit but I figured 2gb would still be capable of opening chrome and all that fine. I'm on a core 2 duo 2.4ghz laptop and it opens programs way faster than that lga 755 3.0ghz duo pentium. core 2 duo is newer tech but I would assume the desktop chip would still be a bit faster.

Alright. My friend is just weird the computer turned off because it was doing windows updates. The computer still has weird lag and I guess I didn't think to realize OEM boards are really picky about ram not like aftermarket wher eyou just basically stick anything in there. Lol going to have to order identical modules I spose. =D

Did you mentioned, that it's an OEM board? Could have saved the hustle biggrin.gif

Lol yeah I've never worked with OEM boards. Forgot they're not as nice as aftermarket where you just basically put any ram speed and capacity and it just runs it at the greatest common memory speed.
