Can you cool and FX-9590 with and Arctic Freezer A30

Thread Starter
According to the documentation of the cooler, it claims it can cool a CPU with 320 Watt TDP. Are these claims valid and has anyone ever tried this? I am not going to buy the 9590 right away and infact will likely just go with an 8350, but I would just like to know in case I decide for some reason to go with the 9590.

If that cooler could do what the documentation claims (320W TDP) then nobody would be buying the higher-end top air coolers or custom loops. That part is bologna.

TDP ratings aren't that meaningful, it just means the cooler can handle that much power while maintaining some arbitrary temperature delta. More watts means slightly higher temps.

More importantly, why would you pair an expensive 9590 with a cheap Arctic cooler?

I think kthat those CPU's ares so hot that only AIO solution LC cooling is absolutely minimum for them wink.gif

I put an Arctic A30 on an 8350 and barely got 4.6ghz at the thermal limit with it.

It is possible to run a 9590 on air, but it really needs $600 worth of custom water cooling hardware to be happy over 5ghz.

Thanks for all your help. I guess if I want to keep the budget as low as I want I will have to stick with the 8350 for an upgrade choice or save a bit longer and get the FX-9590 water cooled or just get a good water cooler. My current CPU is a Phenom II x6 1055T and I am probably getting a new motherboard because mine sucks and doesn't overclock well at all. Would the A30 be able to cool the 1055T at 4GHz? I have it at 3.4 GHz right now and it has a max temp of around 35 Degrees. I am not sure how well it will fare during summer though, I haven't put it up to that test yet.
If the A30 can cool an 8 core cpu to 4.5ghz steady, it should be able to cool a 4 core cpu at 4ghz with some head room. In fact my wife is converting to an FM2+ 6800K 4 core and the A30 will be used there.

There might be two problems with this plan. First, as the water gets hot, the radiator may prove insufficient. Or, the common second, the heatsink interface may not transfer the heat as fast as needed, so the cpu suffers from bad thermal conductivity (temperature/watt). Looking at the latest Cooler Master 140xl review that measured the delta temperature increase after operating for a duration of 45 minutes, I would say hasten for 10 degrees Celcius worse than the optimal result you expect to believe.

A30 heat sink should do it, it design and mass should do the job. But there are issues...
Fan is advertised as extra quiet and there fore obviously week for moving air.
Also A30 I installed into my rig had one of it heat pipes up off by tiny part of millimeter by it entire length and did not had direct contact with CPU, what is absolutely terrible for heat transfer. To make things worse it was also one of inner two heat pipe where most of heat from CPU should be moving to heat sink.
Then contact zone of all heat pipes had machine finished what was seen by eye and could be tested under fingertips, whats also terrible thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif .

I would say that cooler is excellent, robust design, can be rotated into 4 sides. Design as such done over the top, better than most other expensive air coolers.
Unfortunately Im quessing it had come with some production cost cuts by getting under the standard (for today standards) machine work and got merged with week (advertised as quiet) fan.
Thats why its out of box terrible in cooling when under load and there for sold as rather cheap cooler.

But if you are ready to lap it and replace it stock fan with something more powerful (+play a bit with some in case diy air ducts for even more efficiency) its larger heat pipes and bulk size shines.

EDIT: I would rather worry about how to cool VCORE etc with 9590 plugged in. That CPU W consumption must be melting MB parts just like butter if not properly cooled :/
