When you see those dips into 30's or 40's what is your cpu and gpu usage?

Msaa is no where near as effective in Crysis 3 at removing jaggies as compared to Smaa, also its a huge performance hit by comparison compared to Smaa and for what? it doesnt help with any of the vegetation or grass and Crysis 3 is full of those things.

2XSmaa for example looks better than 4XMsaa in Crysis 3 and doesnt take nearly the performance hit of MSAA.

This has nothing to do with the res he is gaming at, it has to do with the fact of how AA is applied to the entire scene with smaa vs msaa. The guy is already struggling somewhat with the settings he is using you are suggesting that he goes to 8XMSAA which is going to cripple his performance even more, clocking his CPU to 4.3ghz will give him a good boost if he leaves his choice of AA the way that it is.

I have a 2700K at 4.8 ghz and a R9 290X at 1200mhz core, I have no trouble maxing out everything in Crysis 3 except for AA which I use smaaX4 and you would be hard pressed to find a jaggie in site. I have tried 8XMSAA and the perf hit is tremendous compared to the smaaX4.

As for the BF3 comment I run 4XMSAA and Force Supersampling for the alpha textures, just because I can and keep 60fps. wink.gif

SMAA is the recommended choice of AA, apparently the msaa in Crysis 3 does do a little bit with the alpha textures which is not the way traditional msaa works but even then its still not as good on the alpha textures as SMAA and it completely misses the ball with specular and shader aliasing showing no improvement in that area at all where SMAA makes all the difference.

It makes no sense to choose MSAA over SMAA in Crysis 3 since it is inferior to SMAA in this particular game and comes with a larger performance hit.

^^^^ is totally correct. SMAA is the best for Crysis 3

Yeah, MSAA half works in Crysis 3 and takes a much larger hit then SMAA and it does a much better job too

It's graphically beautiful. i played that with my 7970 using Very High and 4MSAA. Now with the 290, why would i use the same settings? i guess its just me. just want to get the most of what i paid for the game and the card.

That is understandable but not when the less demanding method of AA is superior in image quality compared to the more taxing method of AA. I mean why lose performance while also missing out on the superior image quality that smaa offers while also keeping a better framerate?

It's no different then some people who never experienced 1440p and say they would rather have a 30" 1080p monitor over a 27" 1440p just because they loose 3" just some have it in their heads that what sounds better should be better

true. if the gpu can't handle it. i understand but i think the issue here is either hardware fault (lack of cpu oc), driver issue or both.
