However with an unlocked CPU like the A8-5600K you should be able to adjust just the CPU multiplier.

you would think so but when i try to adjust the CPU multiplier to 40+ its unstable.

Hmm, 15-30% GPU usage only? What games exactly? Do you know what the core speed is when this spike to 100% happens? I want to eliminate the motherboard throttling and dropping the clocks as a cause for the problem.

it happens in a verity of games. soldier front 2, planet side 2, blacklight retribution, bioshock infinite. some other games will be more balanced between cpu (80-90% usage) and gpu ( 50-70% usage) like elder scrolls beta or thief but with lower frame rate(low 12, avg 35, max 68). core clock speeds should be the same.

I find it hard to believe that a 5600K would bottleneck an HD6870.
Even my old Athlon X4 didnt bottleneck my HD6850. I remember having around 60+ FPS in Starcraft II at high settings 1600x900,
and that game is like the favorite cpu benchmark of all time.

Is this your motherboard? http://www.msi.com/product/mb/FM2A55ME33.html#/?div=Basic
I think its throttling the cpu to avoid overheating the vrms.
The 5600K has 100watt TDP at stock, but overclocking it will increase the TDP.
http://www.overclock.net/t/943109/about-vrms-mosfets-motherboard-safety-with-125w-tdp-processors

Also try putting the cpu back to stock settings and check to see if there is a difference in FPS and cpu usage while gaming.

yes that is my mobo.

ill give that a shot and get back to you.

i played a few rounds in a couple of different games and that seem to help out alot. cpu usage is now 85-95% no spikes too 100% and gpu is getting more utilization running between 50-82%. thief so far is the only game that im have a problem with the frame rate at min 4, avg 29, and max at 68 fps, but ill play with some setting see if i can work that out.
i guess i should upgrade to better mobo when i can afford it.

thanks a lot edalbkrad.

I havent tried Thief 4 yet, maybe its really cpu heavy.
You could add some cooling for your vrms so you can overclock a bit.
Put these and add a small 80mm fan http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835708011

Or if you dont want to spend anything, you could try what we did:

This is on my old athlon, unlocked to phenom 125w TDP

@PunkX 1's unlocked phenom

Currently on my FX6100. Those small blue heatsinks were gpu ram heatsinks. I just used a hacksaw to cut them.
If you have an old motherboard with vrm heatsinks, you could also cut those.

sound like a good idea. i have an intel Pentium 2. i could cut down that heat sink for that and use the fan from it too. an 80mm fam is too big to fit. although im worried about using the heat sinks on the vrms as i've seen others fall off while in use and short peoples system out. i might just put a fan down there.

i think i'll also try a pull configuration for that fan as i have lots of positive air flow in my system no scene in recycling the air from the cpu cooler back in to the system trying to cool those.

You'll need to use thermal tape so they dont fall off.
I bought the gpu ram heatsinks for $2 at a local store here. Those are really cheap and come with thermal tape. Had to use a hacksaw because they were a bit wide.
If there is a store in your country that sells the Enzotech MOS C1 heatsinks, those are taller and will dissipate more heat.
Go for a 60mm fan if 80mm is too big. The fan alone would help you get stable overclock.

Maybe you have an old gpu lying around, those have small heatsinks and easier to cut. Look at this old 6600GT

Check your old pentium II if there's a small heatsink on the motherboard. I dont remember if pentium IIs had onboard video back then.
The cpu heatsink might be big and too hard to cut with a hacksaw.
Dont forget to clean the heatsink before attaching it, there will be some small metal chips if you use a saw.

VRMs/mosfets are the hottest part of your pc. After just turning on your pc at idle, try touching one and you'll see its already warm.
At full load I cant keep my finger longer than 3 seconds without getting burned.
Just make sure you dont touch the metal part, just the plastic part on top.

Here's a better photo of the heatsinks

hello,
my guess is that the turbo is kicking in and its weaker than the 4 core on that game, as the game is rigged up to use 4 threads, if you have turbo turned on in bios disable it.
