Overwhelmed with Z87 motherboard choice - any help? - Page 2

No, it can happen on non-rog boards. It appears that all z87 models can be affected, but not every unit will be affected. I have a Gryphon that is affected, but there are plenty of people with Gryphons who appear to be unaffected.

It's easy to view it as a minority case and think that it's worth taking the risk, but that's what I did and now I'm stuck with this buggy piece of junk. It would be prudent to go for a brand that doesn't have a known issue that can potentially affect all their z87 boards.

I just ordered a GIGABYTE G1.Sniper Z5S LGA 1150 Intel Z87 from Newegg for $144.99. It's the cheapest I've seen, so couldn't resist. It has everything I want and I plan on watercooling pretty soon with a green LED/black scheme and this board already comes with green PCI-E and DIMM slots :-)

That's a new board at it's MSRP. Just FYI you didn't get any deal... Gigabyte released a lot of Sniper boards for Z87. The main difference between Z5 Sniper boards and the others like 5, M5, and Z87 is that they use Realtek codec instead of Creative's.

I really wasn't looking for a bargain-basement board smile.gif just something decent that had the specifications that I needed. I don't do any overclocking, but plan on watercooling my system within the next month or so. This board has everything that I looked for plus an upgraded on-board audio system (I listen to a lot of music so this was a HUGE plus).

I already have a Creative Labs audio card, but it looks like the one on this new G1 Sniper might be superior to it....my ears will let me know pretty much instantly LOL.

I just recently upgraded to an Intel i4770k and the Intel board that it came with pretty much sucks (DH87MC).

I don't think that the price of the Gigabyte was too bad...I've seen lower-rated boards costing much more than $144.

I also love the color scheme--black and green, as I plan on adding Green LED lights and fans to my system anyway...make it look like a UFO.

That board has received some pretty nasty comments on Newegg.

No SLI support (only has 1 PCI-E 3.0 slot)
Only has 6 holes (instead of 9) to screw it down, apparently a little on the thin side as well
Lots of complaints about the plastic CPU cover causing damage to the pins in the CPU slot
