I've been designing a silent PC and am not satisfied with the most powerful passively cooled GPUs available. What I am wondering is if anyone has tried using AMD's PowerTune settings to reduce power/clock down a high end (270X or higher) card and completely turn off the fans when idle. That way the system is silent during normal use, but the fans can spin up and give you high end gaming performance when you want it. PowerTune seems pretty eager to throttle those cards already. I just don't have an R7/R9 card to play with.
