I don't think it would be representative of the "best" compute efficiency that Phenom II had to offer and as such wouldn't feel it a very good matchup. Thanks for the consideration though wink.gif

I hear you about the 720 not being an ideal choice, but is the only Phenom family chip I have ready access to ATM. I feel like I read a very thorough, balls to the wall 6300 vs. X6 comparo sometime back, don't remember where though. The gist of it was the 6300 did pull away once it hit 5.25, but only because the X6 ran out of daylight around 4.4.

If only I could find someone with a thuban who could run some of the same standardized benchmarks that I can under linux mint, compare power consumption results, OCed vs OCed, finely tuned vs finely tuned etc .... poke.gif

I dont have linux, only windows 7

but here are some of the benchmarks that i passed

I was thinking it would be educational and entertaining to put a decent clocking thuban X6 up against an FX-6300 to see which really does have the better compute efficiency for a given performance level, in a true "tuned vs tuned" scenario. See post 39 above.. I linked to another 3rd party test that would appear to suggest that PD achieved better compute efficiency than thuban when both are performance "tuned." btupsx believed those particular 3rd party tests to be suspect (a very reasonable skepticism). A good way to get to the bottom of it, would be set up a competition of sorts and measure power consumption of each CPU (as best we can) when each is "tuned" to achieve the same performance level.

I figured the most "fair" comparison to really get to the bottom of it would be in a 6core vs 6core competition (since the 8 core could obviously be tuned down and under-volted quite a bit and still compete with the 6 core in most parallel workloads). Also, by allowing each party to achieve the "best" result they can get through performance tuning (either minimizing power consumption or improving performance with tuning), there would be nothing "left on the table" to so to speak.

In comparisons where the Thuban is stronger than the FX-63XX, the thuban could be down-clocked and tuned to match the performance of the FX chip, to attempt to achieve a better power consumption result. Same the other way around when the FX is stronger, it would be down-clocked and tuned to match the thuban. This could be repeated for a number of tests. Some FPU, some compiling, etc.

Hi Schmuckly,

I only see Zambezi represented there. Everyone knows Zambezi was a half-baked-mistake.

Ashtyr,

I did just discover something fun:

Runs fine in linux under wine. Appears to even score about right for a 5ghz FX-6300. (shows 4ghz in program because as far as I have been able to figure, linux doesn't have anything in place to detect and account for the reference clock adjustment, it "assumes" the 200mhz reference clock). I can run a program that "times" the CPU against the system clock and calculates speed though (which works very accurately and shows ~5017mhz or whatever usually)

Right, right...

Would you like to point me to the Vishera benchmarks though? I mean, the last post in that thread was done before Vishera even hit the market, about a month before. Because Vishera kicks Zambezi's ass, rendering all your testing useless and you need to start over.

Right, but why are they scarce? It's not because of original limited production; it's because they are still in high demand. Illustrating my point, as irony would have it, over the past 36 hours I simultaneously sold my 1055T for a number I couldn't refuse, and found a new 8320 for a number I also couldn't refuse, but the amount I got for the 1055T is more than double what I paid for the 8320. So now I have to decide whether to make a new rig around the 8320, or use this 3570k I have staring at me.
If my 1055T hadn't of randomly sold (had been listed for sale at a price I was extremely doubtful most would pay), I would have suited up, done my best Barney Stinson impression and said " challenge accepted!!!" But alas, it seems it is not meant to be....sad-smiley-002.gif It's going to be strange not having an X6 anymore.

I think the Thubans are getting scarce. I was buying 1070T's for less than $100 anytime I wanted on eBay. Of course 1090T's and 1100T's were a little more. This was about a year ago. I think many people think they are better performers than the six and eight core Vishera's. Its like an urban legend. A myth.

This is about the limit of FPU performance on my FX-6300, still can't compete with thuban even at 5.3ghz!
