...

By that logic, Bonaire should have very similar hashes per watt as Hawaii or Pitcairn to Tahiti yet going by the Litecoin Mining Hardware Comparison, a HD7870 gets around 400kH/s at 200w while a HD7970 can get up to 760kH/s at 270w to use some random examples...That's not even close. I can even confirm it honestly, my girlfriend has a HD7850 and I have a HD7950, the HD7950 puts out way more heat and uses way more watts while not really being that much faster than the HD7850 in gaming. Generally that's true of larger GPUs in general in my experience...

Which weren't the best coolers in the first place. See, Hawaii vs GK110 stock vs stock is very close. GK110 wins when compared clock for clock. In order for AMD to compete, they clocked their Hawaii chips higher. Heat production goes up linearly with clockspeed and by the square of the voltage (I think). Granted, this also assumes that 100% of the power drawn is dissipated as heat, but that isn't too inaccurate for solid-state electronics. For AMD to compete with Nvidia, they shot themselves in the foot by clocking their chips too high with too crappy a cooler.

I'm skeptical of your 270W claim, but the hashrates seem accurate since they are determined by shader count, correct? So... Thanks for proving my point? Low-end GPUs use more energy. High-end uses less. Despite this, low-end Maxwell beats high-end Hawaii by a huge margin. GTX 880 + CUDAMiner? Goodbye, reasonable prices!

The should just keep putting out test samples till their yield is strong.

Actually, my point is that it varies. (I just grabbed random numbers from the Litecoin wiki, too. Not sure if 270w is accurate but I could see it for a highly OCed HD7970.) The HD7850 is far, far more efficient than the HD7950 and my point is that we have zero idea on how Maxwell scales...It might be more efficient than Hawaii or it might not scale as well because you'd never know from the HD7850 that it's related to the R9 290X in architecture going merely by efficiency...I believe VLIW4 also scaled down worse than GCN has so far too, it really does vary.
