Dude I have 3 reservations with 50 miles and honestly natives that can do for themselves are damn lazy. They get a big fat check for 20-30k when they turn 18 and most of them don't care. They fight and kill each other just like the savages people claimed them to be. I would rather go into a gang neighborhood in los angeles than some of these damn reservations.

i'm from the UK and have to admit my knowledge of their reservations is nill - why do they get 20-30k ?

Is it to do with their land stolen from them ?

And I don't want to start a who's right thread here, cos we Brits have a lot to answer for as did the Romans, the Vikings and so on and it would be pointless to blame anyone today redface.gif

It's actually very interesting for me as an Australian to hear you guys' various opinions on the Native Americans, it parallels the situation of the Australian Indigenous population in many ways.
Before you Americans have school assemblies and the like, do you guys say 'we recognise that this land historically belonged to xxx tribe', or something along those lines?

If they continue to do things the way they have in the past, nothing will change and things will only get worse.

Super country that stole their land - indeed the greatest...

Germany ... France... England... China... Japan... I'm struggling to think of a country that didn't start wars for resources. We also give out more than 2x the money than any other country to help those in need.

I do wish them the best with it but I have to admit I do not understand it. I lived on the Pine Ridge as a kid helping my grandmother take care of her piece (shack and property) during the '70's. On the Ridge at that time were numerous people with computer science and computer engineering degrees, yet no software development was being done. Same thing in the '80's, the '90's and the naughts. I do not understand why not only one, but a few different types of software have not been developed by this point and time. I think that would be the best road for not only the Oglala Tribe to go but all the tribes of the many american indian nations. I wish they would embrace this opportunity and use it to end the oppression of the US government.

To those that have posted the various "Indians are lazy" type of comments. You are incorrect. I have spent time on a few other reservations over my 50 winters on this planet and it is the same on all of them. All that is different is the degree of oppression. Here are a few of many facts that you can check out...

1. The Pine Ridge Reservation is, to this very day, listed as Prisoner Of War Camp #334 by the US Bureau of Indian Affairs.

2. Adolf Hitler modeled his concentration camps from the US Bureau of Indian Affairs reservation system. I could say quite a few things on this subject but am very sure it would violate the politic's thing on this forum.

3. During the entire nineteenth century the US Army lost to only one armed force on the battlefield and that was (their terminology here) The Grand Teton Souix, and the BIA tosses the Oglala's into this basket. One of the most well known was the loss of Custer at the battle of Little Bighorn. Once again I could make a few comments on this subject but do not want to violate any part of the TOS.

4. Since 1812 the US Government has signed over 100 treaties with the Oglala nation. All were broken by the US Government. Many within days of being signed.

I will say this to those of you posting that indians are lazy. Change your last name to Lightfoot or Two Bulls, die your skin brown, your hair black, and then go live on the Pine Ridge for a year. If you would like an undeniably crystal clear view live there for a decade. I would wager that few of you would last a week and none of you would last one month. I was on the Ridge the summer between second and third grade when I was told by a wise old grandfather "One can not judge another until one has walked a mile in his moccasin's". Yes it is old and corny, but it is VERY true.

yeah it's true but guess what? even if you were a victim in the past you still have to go out and find a way to support yourself, those are just the facts of life. complaining doesn't put food on the table, oh wait these days it kind of does

#19 on that same list if you consider development assistance by country as a percentage of Gross National Income
