AMD No longer a viable option for mid-high end? - Page 130

Not only does intel use less power, you can fit them into micro atx cases with micro atx motherboards, most of which are cheaper than full sized atx parts. You can create a pretty tiny but powerful machine. And the r9 GPU's can fit into most micro atx cases with room to spare. you'll never have to worry about heat, and if you liquid cool all the better.

But yeah, you can get away with a 400w PSU for I think all intel CPU's, even the 6 core variants, with virtually any single videocard. When maxwell architecture offers higher performing cards, we're going to be seeing high end performance at 100 watts for a GPU. At that rate, you could literally run a 3930K intel with a high end GPU at less than 300 watts for the whole system.

I'm glad we're seeing cards with single 6 pins again. For a while there you couldn't get anything mid-high end without at least two 6 pins or so.

Not when OCing you can't, especially not with Gulftown or SB-E (which can easily pull 200-250w at decent OCs when stressed). AMD's Hawaii GPU can also be stupid power hungry in some situations, even without being OCed; I can crack 360w at stock clocks in OCCT with my 290X (and that's at the card, not the wall).

Only with careful tweaking and undervolting at near stock speeds would I recommend using a 400w PSU for an Intel hex core and a high end GPU (say a GTX 780).

Sig system with one moderately OCed 3930k and a single stock clocked R9 290X can be made to pull well over 700w at the wall, on an 80Plus Platinum rated PSU (~91% efficiency at that load).

Which benchmark (s) do you run to get it to max out power draw? I'm curious as to what my rig pulls with both CPU + GPU maxed out. In 3DMark11 it hovers around 300-350W.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the 64 GFlops figure in LinX shown a few posts above is actually on the low side even without AVX, because I had Hyper-Threading (8 threads) enabled for that run, and optimal performance in LinX is achieved with Hyper-Threading disabled. I just did a run with the AVX version of LinX and the GFlops figures hovered around 140.

best one i've found is Firestrike Extreme Combined Test. equaled the power draw of both Prime95 and Valley running at once.

Furmark will pull stupid level power draws though.

Less and less people are running "full Windows".That is what Microsoft and Intel are up against. We on this forum love our desktops but we are fast becoming a minority. The future is in mobile. Phone and tablet sales dwarf sales of both desktops and laptops. You may like your Windows tablet but 90% of mobile sales are iPhones, iPads and Android devices.

11 threads of Prime95 27.9 LargeFFTs 128k-256k FFT size; OCCT 3.1.0 stress test, shader complexity 8, with GPU throttling disabled via the PT1 BIOS (+50% power limit comes pretty close), and ADIA64 hammering my RAID 0 with a looped random access benchmark, while I listen to some music to drown out the 100% fan speed of the 290X.

12 threads + Furmark extreme burn-in is about the same (Furmark is slightly less stressful than OCCT, but also uses less CPU, allowing CPU stress tests to be run on all threads).

Once the room I'm in gets to about 95F (takes about 10 minutes with the door shut), everything (except the PSU which does not care) is hot enough to be thoroughly inefficient (still stable though!) and I easily cross 700w.
