Budget: around $ 400 - $ 450, doesn't have to be strictly below/at $ 450

Already have an optical drive and HDDs.

My stepdad seems to prefer Intel but I guess he could be open to AMD if I would insist (and if you can recommend it as an alternative).

Saw the i3-4130 recommended by Tom's but when I read the conclusions of xXbit and BitTech, they didn't seem to be putting much praise on the CPU.

He says the most intensive he'll do is some video editing (though I don't think he's ever meddled with full HD content).

He says he uses Terratec (analog videos?) and some DVD editing softwares.

I guess at best, he'll mess with BluRay w/c he's actually never done yet. Just putting that out for future considerations.

What do you guys think?

If the i3-4130 seems a decent CPU, what parts would you recommend to complement it with (mobo/ram/psu/case/etc.).. maybe even some cheap Windows 8 software. He's still using XP but likely open to the latest Windows iteration.

For the motherboard, you don't need anything fancy for the I3 4130. If you want something cheap that has some good features, check out the ASrock H81M-HDS, which is only $50 at Microcenter, or $55 from Mwave with free shipping. As for the ram, just get 8GB of generic DDR3 1600MHZ, and you should be fine. For the PSU, check out THIS thread, and make a choice from whats there. You shouldnt need any more than 300W-450W. As far as the case goes, just get something that is cheap, but reliable. While I have never used any of these, I have heard they are great for the price. Check out the NZXT Source 210 Elite/220, or the Fractal Design Core 1000/3000.

Thanks

I will check up on these soon.

I wish we had an MC nearby or at least even a debit card so we can purchase online but I'll try to use your listed items as a reference and would love input later on when I'm trying to finalize the parts.

Thanks again.

i3-4130 is a strong chip. Comparable in performance to a SandyBridge i5 in parallel workloads, but even better for video work as it has an iGPU with good openCL performance and modern hardware video decode/encode support. From what I am "gathering" this machine would never be used to edit anything more than "consumer high-def" level video like 50Mb/s HD from a fancy camcorder someday maybe. The 4130 would work fine for that. More would be "nice" but unnecessary. Provided it's not intended for gaming then the iGPU in the i3 will be fine for amateur video editing.

An H81 motherboard may be all that is really needed but I generally push for a B85 or H87 because they tend to be built better and be more flexible in the long run. H87 if you think you might want to setup an SSD cache drive. The Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H is one of the best budget B85 microATX boards IMO.

A 2x4GB 1600MT/s 1.5V kit would be good. Avoid Team/OCZ/PNY. Crucial Ballistix Sport has been cheap lately.

SeaSonic SSR-360GP for the PSU.

CoolerMaster N200 is probably the most handsome microATX case under $50 right now.
