I don't remember the team being #1 in any project, and there is no mention of it in the "History of the OCN BOINC Team" thread.

POTM Update:

  •  GPUGrid:  Start: 26; Goal: 24; Currently: 25 | Might need a little more NVIDIA power to get to 24th.
  • The Lattice Project:  Start: 74; Goal: ??; Currently: 65 |  If you've got 14GB of RAM to spare than this is the project for you. :thumb:
  • CONVECTOR: Start: 6; Goal: 5; Currently: 3 | #1 in the world is in our sites.  We should hit #2 before the end of the month. :D
  • LHC@Home:  Start: 42; Goal: 41; Currently: 42 |  Task availability is still pretty random, but we have been crunching every task that comes our way. ;)

To be fair the team didn't exist as long as some others

Also until last year it didn't have a subforum. frown.gif

Right now the only compelling reason to do it over folding is if you're into astronomy/astrophysics more than protein folding (OCN is #3 according to the sidebar)

If you want to be #1 the team can't be diluted and needs to focus on one project (I think Xtremesystems tries to do that with GPUGrid ; SETIUSA and SETI Germany for SETI).

Was thinking about moving my GTX 280 into my rig with the 780 Ti, since I think the PSU can handle both..a Corsair 1000HX..however I wonder if it would hurt game performance...being that my mobo only supports PCIe 2.0 and 2 cards would knock it down to 8x from 16x. Oh well, I guess I could just put it in temporarily during the event. I was looking for either another 295 or 280 on ebay and they want around $100 for the 280, and up to $200 for the 295. I was hoping they were only around $50. They were monsters back in the day, but for that price, I'd rather go with a 560 TI that is pretty much equal or better performance.

Give it some time I have a feeling gpus will be dropping soon. Newegg has a msi 7970 for $350 and that's pretty good considering that's what it was before btc hit the roof at $1000/coin almost a year ago. With btc crashing to $566 as of right now people will be unloading their cards.

The only prpject I know of that is VERY VERY PCIe BUSS intensive is Einstein@home (and Albert) and dropping to X8 mode will for sure lower PPD. So far though, all the other GPU tasks I have run do fine on X8... but I've not tested using a high-powered card like the 780!!!

It's not just that, it's because summer is coming.

Oh interesting, wasn't aware that einstein was such a PCIe bus hog. Might have to do some testing with my 465....

The difference between an X8 and an X16 buss with GTX 580's is about 15%-22% depending on which search task is run. I suspect the motherboard and DRAM speed and other things enter into the picture to some degree as well.

I found out about this (and verified it later) when I inquired in the Einstein forum "because" my times were slower than the exact same GTX 580 cards at the same clocks used by others. Imagine my surprise!
