Help with GTX 770 Lightning! - Page 5

It wasn't Heaven that was displaying 1241, it was RivaStats. And it was 1241 in any application or game I ran, 1241 was my actual speed out of box. Heaven was saying my speed was 1306, which is just wildly inaccurate. I knew to disregard what Heaven was telling me and rely on Riva.

The problem is.. your GPU was actually rendering Heaven at 1306mhz - or that's my understanding of it, anyway. The stat in rivatuner etc does not actually correspond to the speed while running this program, and it runs higher due to a problem on software or driver level. That's the strong impression that i get - for example, if i boost a game so that MSI AB says card is at 1306mhz, it crashes after a few minutes. If i run 1293 it runs fine.

If i run heaven and heaven says 1293, it runs fine. MSI AB says ~1254mhz.

If i run heaven and boost it by 10mhz.. MSI AB says like 40mhz lower still, but heaven says 1306mhz - and it crashes after a few mins there, too. That's an example of why i think it could actually be running faster - regardless, there is a problem somewhere, a widespread one.

Heaven is running perfectly at 1920x1080 DX11, 8xAA, Extreme Tesselation, and stock speeds on the 780. However... my EVGA GTX 780 is supposed to come in at 1020Mhz out of box, mine is at 1071Mhz out of box. I should be happy with this extra 50Mhz of performance at stock settings, but after the problem with my 770, I'm not so confident.

There's a base clock, a boost clock, and like an actual max clock. Your speed over the "boost" clock is normal. Enjoy your new 780, ramp it up - you can probably hit 1200 at load for 24/7 use, or atleast 1100's np, with the power limit allowed on stock bios. It'll be fine wink.gif 1.212v is completely ok for these GPU's too. They've lived through 1.5v on chilled water for benching, people regularly throw 1.3v+ at them in the 780 bench threads etc. 1.212 is a low limit, if you want to use it~

I think I have good air flow and circulation, but having the exhaust go directly into the case rather than out just seems like a really bad design.

It's considered a good design because it is more thermally and acoustically efficient when there is sufficient case airflow (cools cooler and quieter)

I have a question about fan placement. Here is my current configuration.

The two orange fans are Cougar Vortex PWM 1500rpm, I also have a 3rd that I haven't placed yet, I'm asking advice on where to place this 3rd Cougar Vortex fan.

The yellow is some crappy Kingwin 900rpm that was free after rebate

The red fan is a simple case fan that doesn't get recognized by Asus Fan Xpert2, so I just attached it via molex at its current position to get some constant airflow. If I had to guess, its 800rpm

The green is my CM Hyper 212 EVO.

I am wondering where I should put my 3rd cougar vortex. I am deciding between exhaust(yellow) or the top most fan(red). I have tried both the case fan and the kingwin in a push/pull on my 212 EVO, but the brackets aren't mounting properly, so I will remain with just the 1 on my CPU for now.

Either would probably work. To be honest i don't know and it's hard to check without something like a smoke machine, or simply trying both configs with something like a temperature sensor at multiple places. Either way, since you can run 2-3 intakes, you might get significant temperature gains if you remove the pci-e slot covers under your graphics card to allow air to flow through that area more easily. I've seen a few reports of gains over 5c on top of already good airflow setups, though even a few degrees helps

Looking at the pic again.. Red is probably a good bet

Surprisingly, when I run Heaven and Valley, Unigine isn't showing my core clock speeds.

How did you change Heaven to show the correct core clock speed?

I can't, i just run heaven without a core offset. Any offset pushes the speed it says to 1306 and makes me unstable, i think i have to even run a negative offset of like -10 to make it run 100% stable. All of my games though i'm fine pushing my max clock from the stock of ~1254 to about 1280 or 1293 as shown by MSI AB

My only problem with putting it in the red position, is that it would have to be run through molex and I wouldn't be able to change the rpm, it would be constant. With such a nice fan, I feel I would be wasting its full potential by running it via molex.

Maybe if I plugged it into the CPU_OPT port, and just controlled it through the CPU Fan settings. Also, if I put the Cougar in as an exhaust, does it make sense to have such a nice fan working as an exhaust?

I'm noticing that when I close Unigine my video card is making quite a lot of "ramp down" noise. Its like a high pitched whirring/spinning noise that goes away after a few seconds, but concerning nonetheless.

It kind of makes sense in both slots, i just thought top is maybe better because it gives you more positive pressure (and more airflow going out of the hole where the pci-e slot covers were under the gpu if you were to set up fans like this and remove those covers) as well as putting stream of room-temp air right in front of your hyper 212 which could help given that you're most likely going to be temperature-limited for overclocking 4670k with a hyper 212 (uncomfortable temps by 1.4 vcore)

I decided to just leave the side panel off of my case. I noticed a difference of up to 11C between open and closed case Also, my PCIe slots are perforated, so there is already plenty of airflow through those.

You'd be surprised how much airflow there can be wink.gif

If you're observing a 10c difference between closed and open case.. your case is probably heating up by ~10c+. The goal with fans, airflow etc is to prevent that as much as possible
