Looking for a good modem for gaming sharehouse

Hi everyone. I just moved into an apartment with two other friends who are gamers and love watching youtube videos.

As stated in the heading, the predominate use case for the internet is that of gaming and youtube/streaming. Gaming seems to be fine the majority of the time when playing games like League of Legends, World of Warcraft and CS:GO. We seem to have no issues all gaming at the same time with the same or different games as our ping is stable under 40ms in League of Legends and CS:GO.

The only issue we seem to be having is when someone watches a youtube video all the bandwidth seems to be allocated to them and people playing League of Legends for example, seem to spike up to a much higher and unplayable ping. This also happens with streaming, but not to the same extent as youtube video.

We are currently using a free el'cheapo modem from an Australian provider (Technicolor TG587n v3), and it isn't that great and I believe it is causing us some issues in regards to us watching youtube videos and playing games at the same time. I'm looking for a modem that can traffic shape so people have a more stable ping while someone wants to watch a youtube video.

If someone could recommend a decent modem (as I think our modem would be sucked to bridge with a router) between $100 to $150~ish that could help to some extent with our issues regarding videos and gaming at the same time that'd be awesome. Thanks guys!

If you happen to have an old tower that you're willing to use as a router (you will require 2 ethernet ports), you can set the modem to bridge mode, and then connect it to a box with pFsense installed. Once installed, you can set QoS settings, and won't overheat your modem nearly as much since it isn't taking care of the routing issues - it's just merely feeding the premises with the internet at its fastest.
